Graduate Student Associations Workshop

January 29, 2010, 1-4pm, Max Kade Center (7th Floor, Old Chemistry)

This workshop will be hosted by the GSGA Vice-President, Peggy Shannon-Baker. The purpose of this workshop is to address questions, comments, and problems graduate student groups have been having with the following:

-Increasing graduate student involvement within the group in a positive manner

-Event organizing (from figuring out an appropriate event, to organizing, finding speakers, funding, etc)

-GSGA funding and fundraising (for groups and individuals)

From my interaction with the various GSGA groups, I have been able to experience how each group operates, what they specifically offer their students, where each group would like to improve, and what issues they're facing. Many of these aspects overlap multiple groups, and yet there hasn't been a concrete mechanism to allow conversation among these groups to share their histories, issues, and ideas. Thus the organization of this workshop is meant to facilitate such discussion among current and future graduate student group leaders. Therefore participants are asked to bring questions, ideas, and information about any of the above items, or anything else relevant to graduate students/groups. Here is a tentative schedule:

1pm: Introductions; Graduate Student Involvement

1:45pm: Event Organizing

2:30pm: LUNCH (Provided by GSGA)

3pm: GSGA funding

3:30pm: Any additional discussion

This is a tentative schedule to give attendees an idea of what topics will be covered when so that they can plan according to their schedules. Also the times are not definitive. Since this is a discussion-defined workshop, some sections may run over or finish early; this depends on the attendees.
