A few words from our former Supplemental Instruction Leaders...
Meet Teresa C.: Being a Supplemental Instructor for Organic Chemistry has been a big part of my life for the past two years. Organic Chemistry is considered one of the most difficult courses of college and it brought me great joy to aid younger students become successful in sophomore chemistry. SI has not only allowed me to gain better understanding of chemistry which will help me in my future studies in grad school for chemistry, but it also allowed me to form lasting relationships with students and faculty that I might not have had the opportunity to connect with. I would encourage all students to attend SI sessions to become more successful in their courses, build friendships and better appreciate the subject matter. For students considering becoming a Supplemental Instructor, grab the opportunity to lead other and interact with faculty and staff of UC. Teresa graduated June 2008 and will be attending graduate school for Organic Chemistry at the University of Cincinnati! Congratulations Teresa and Good luck with your future endeavors! We hope to see you at here for SI leader training's and meetings! We would benefit greatly from your expertise!
Rosyland M.: I was born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio graduating from Mt. Healthy High School in 2003. I graduated with a Bachelor's of Science from the University of Cincinnati as a Darwin T. Turner Scholar. I am currently am enrolled at the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in the Medical/Dental Education Preparatory Post-Baccalaureate Program. This program is helping me prepare to become a more competitive medical school applicant. I am also in the application process of applying to medical school. During the summer, I am at UC Medical School in the Summer Premedical Enrichment Program. This is a six week program to give shadowing experience and assistance on the application process. The SI program has helped me a great deal while at UC. It enhanced my leadership skills as well as the ability to be well organized and task oriented. I enjoyed the program and the opportunities for vast personal growth while having fun meeting new people. Congratulations Rosyland and good luck with your future endeavors! We will miss you!
Meet Erika O.: I was a junior biology major when I first starting working as an organic chemistry SI leader. I started working for SI because I really enjoyed organic chemistry when I took the class, and I have always liked helping other people learn concepts. Working with the students in SI was very fun, and I enjoyed going to my sessions. The other SI leaders are great people and working in the office was always fun. SI helped me learn how to prepare lessons and remain organized. It helped me to discover new ways to study for my other classes as well. This experience also gave me the opportunity to review the subject prior to taking the MCAT. This fall I will be attending medical school at UC. Congratulations Erika and good luck with your future endeavors! We will miss you!
Meet Emily S.: I a pre-med student majoring in Biology and Spanish major and am also minoring in Philosophy. I am the President of the UC Mountaineering Club and am also highly involved in Engineers Without Borders. After graduating in June I will be attending UC’s College of Medicine. For my Junior and Senior years I have served in the Supplemental Instruction Program for the freshman Biology sequence and have found it extremely rewarding both academically and personally. Being an SI Leader was tremendously helpful for my own pre-med curriculum, and was a great way to review for the MCAT (the medical college admissions test); it was a fabulous way to cement my knowledge of biology by reviewing it in my SI sessions. Personally, I have had a great time holding sessions and hanging out with students who attend, and have met many interesting people through them. The SI Program is a wonderful opportunity to learn and review subject content and also to meet people! I highly recommend it to everyone! Emily graduated June 2008 and will be attending Medical School at the University of Cincinnati! Congratulations Emily and Good Luck with your future endeavors! We will miss you!
Meet David S.:
I am currently a graduate student in the chemistry department at Princeton University. Being an SI leader helped me tremendously in a number of ways. One, it helped me retain and better understand my subject of interest. SI also taught me how to communicate in a beneficial way with students from a number of different backgrounds. More importantly, it helped build and strengthen relationships with various faculty members in the chemistry department. This not only improved my undergraduate career, but it helped me build contacts for graduate school and beyond. Congratulations David and Good Luck with your future endeavors! We will miss you!
Meet Luyao S.: I finished a B.S. in biology and a B.A. in Math with a minor in Chemistry in three years. I will be going to UC College of Medicine starting August 2008. I have been a SI leader for two years during which I SIed for Organic Chemistry (201-203) and Biochemistry (651-653). I love being a SI leader because of the nice working environment and flexibility of time, and because we have a great supervisor. Being a SI leader has helped me improve my organizational and effective communicational skills. Outside of school, I love to dance and sing. Ballroom and international Latin dancing is my passion. Tips for getting good grades and doing well in school: study, set aside time for studying, there is no easy way out. Congratulations Luyao and Good luck with your future endeavors! We will miss you!
