Ellen Handler Spitz is a renowned scholar in art, psychology and children’s literature. She is currently a professor of visual arts in the Honors College of the University of Baltimore. Spitz received her doctorate at Columbia University after studies at Harvard and Barnard College. Her most recent books, which been reviewed in the
New York Times, include
Inside Picture Books (Yale University Press, 1999) which has been translated into Italian, Japanese and Korean;
Museums of the Mind: Magritte’s Labyrinth and Other Essays in the Arts (Yale University Press, 1994);
Image and Insight: Essays in Psychoanalysis and the Arts (Columbia University Press, 1991);
Art and Psyche: A Study in Psychoanalysis and Aesthetics (Yale University Press, 1985, Italian edition in 1993); and her forthcoming book
The Brightening Glance: Imagination and Childhood (Pantheon Press/Random House, 2006), which will be the subject of her illustrated lecture.
The Annual Beatrice Winkler Lecture Series in Judaic Studies was established in 2003 by the friends and family of Bea Winkler, former UC first lady, for her tireless devotion and commitment to the Department of Judaic Studies as a founding member and president of the Friends of Judaic Studies.
