Perhaps no composer played a greater role in establishing the Classical style than Franz Joseph Haydn. A master of both functional and expressive techniques, Haydn's contributions to the string quartet repertoire are indisputable. His String Quartet in F Minor, Op. 20, No. 5 was one of a series of "Sun Quartets" composed in the mid-1770s that expanded the resources of traditional quartet texture, resulting in larger dimensions and a greater emotional range. The Sun Quartets have been regarded as milestones in the development of the string quartet genre and paved the way for new possibilities for the form. French composer Henri Dutilleux wrote Ainsi la nuit (Thus the night) for String Quartet in 1975, and it represents his only piece for string quartet. Not classifiable by any single aesthetic school, Dutilleux's compositions reflect his disdain for dogmatism and systemization, instead adopting a fluid and improvisatory character, though his traceable influences include Ravel and Debussy. His thematic material is continually renewed through subtle and gradual revelation of his musical ideas and this pervasive characteristic unites the seemingly diverse forms that his compositions assume. The program ends with a return to the conventional Classical style in Schubert's String Quartet in D Minor, D. 810, "Death and the Maiden." Written during a period in which Schubert was struggling with the illness that would eventually take his life, this quartet is infused with a poignancy and pathos that result in a more poetic and imaginative style than his earlier works. Regarded as one of the greatest compositions in the chamber music repertoire, this quartet is based on a song by the same name and demonstrates Schubert's mastery of intense lyricism, chromatic modulation and attention to textural detail. The Tokyo String Quartet has captivated audiences and critics alike since it was founded in 1969 at the Juilliard School of Music. The Quartet is comprised of violist Kazuhide Isomura, a founding member of the group; second violinist Kikuei Ikeda, who joined the ensemble in 1974; new first violinist Martin Beaver; and cellist Clive Greensmith, formerly principal cellist of London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
They play on the acclaimed "Paganini Quartet" instruments named for Niccolo Paganini who acquired and played them during the 19th century. Thirty landmark recordings reflect the group's vast performance repertoire. Last season included performances at New York's Mostly Mozart Festival, a residency at Stanford University and concerts in Miami, Houston, Santa Fe, Toronto and Montreal. Along with performances at CCM this year, the Quartet also performs and gives master classes at Eastman School of Music, Duke University, University of Georgia and University of Washington. Tickets for the Tokyo String Quartet performance are $12 for adults and $8 for non-UC students. UC students are admitted free of charge with a valid student ID.
