“Dr. Henney has the administrative skills, scholarly outlook and research background necessary to direct our world-class Medical Center,” said UC President Joseph A. Steger. “Her multi-faceted career indicates an excellent fit for our dynamic health-science programs.”

"I am excited and eager for the opportunity to lead a medical center that embodies both a long tradition of excellence and has exceptionally high aspirations for the future,"  Henney said.  “The UC faculty, staff and students are simply extraordinary. They have created a learning and care environment that is widely admired. I look forward to becoming part of the Cincinnati community."

Henney noted that the innovation represented by the "quite novel" Genome Research Institute, the molecular science programs housed at the Vontz Center and the planned CARE (Center for Academic and Research Excellence) facility indicate that an institution known for innovation continues to aim toward greater accomplishment.

The senior vice president, reporting to UC’s president, is responsible for the colleges, programs and activities of the UC Medical Center. The Medical Center contains UC’s colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences, as well as Hoxworth Blood Center. Affiliated entities include Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, UC Physicians, Health Alliance, Cincinnati Shriner’s Hospital, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and BioStart.

A native of Indiana, Henney grew up in Woodburn. She received her undergraduate degree from Manchester College and her medical degree from Indiana University. She completed her training in medical oncology at the M.D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute and the National Cancer Institute.

Henney has served in senior health-policy leadership positions in the public sector over the past 20 years at the National Cancer Institute, the University of Kansas Medical Center, the Food and Drug Administration, and the University of New Mexico.

Donald C. Harrison, Senior Vice president and Provost for Health Affairs since 1986, retired in December 2002.
