Within the inner workings of a university the size of UC are thousands of jobs and responsibilities that never really fall within anyone's defined job description.
Fortunately, a select number of people within an organization can recognize those needs and, instead of shying away from them, learn to embrace them and enrich themselves from the experience of truly helping out.
The Faculty Senate is honoring those who make that kind of commitment with the University Service Awards they introduced last year and, in 2006, Bruce Ault and Nancy Hamant are the ones being recognized for their tremendous commitment to service at UC.
Here are more details about the contributions of this year's winners:
Bruce S. Ault
Professor of Chemistry, McMicken College of Arts & Sciences
Colleagues say that Bruce S. Ault is one of those rare faculty members who can be counted on to pitch in and help whenever needed.

In fact, in just the past year, Ault served on the Department of Chemistry’s long-range planning committee, faculty search committee and departmental head search committee. In addition, he serves as the department’s undergraduate program director and chairs the university’s Graduate Fellows.
Nearly every year of Ault’s tenure at UC since 1976 chronicles a similar practice of service to the university and to professional groups.
His service record includes the New Faculty Mentoring Program, the Medical School Application Interview Committee, the Undergraduate Council’s scholarships and awards subcommittee, Teaching TAs to Teach University-wide Committee, and much more.
He is the 1995 winner of the Barbour Award.
Nancy R. Hamant
Associate Professor, College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services
Dr. Nancy Hamant’s service to UC began during her college days in the 1950s and has never stopped.

Hamant came to UC as a freshman in 1953 and joined the education faculty in 1964. As a student she was a member of Mortar Board, Zeta Tau Alpha and Phi Beta Kappa. As a faculty member she has served as faculty advisor to the first two and twice as chapter president of the last.
A true pillar of the university community, Hamant has served as UC Faculty Athletics Representative since 1986 and as a member of the Athletics Advisory Committee since 1983. She is part of the Ad Hoc Committee on University Governance now working as a result of UC|21. She is an ex-officio member of the UC Foundation Board and recently co-chaired the "We’re All UC" faculty/staff campaign.
She also has been a board member and president of the Alumni Association.
