UC Engineers with Pride at 2008 Banquet

  

On May 16 at its annual banquet, the University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Engineering shows pride in its alumni with the inaugural presentation of the Herman Schneider Distinguished Alumnus Award established to honor one alumna or alumnus who embodies the aspirations of College of Engineering alumni and the Lifetime Achievement Award to honor the full span of career achievements.

Dan Kellogg, 1975 chemical engineering

The College of Engineering is presenting the inaugural Herman Schneider Distinguished Alumnus Award to Dan Kellogg (’75 ChE), managing director of Crystal Ventures. Kellogg co-founded Crystal Ventures in 1997 with Joseph Tzeng in Cleveland, Ohio. Crystal Ventures is a $170 million global family of venture funds focused on high-tech investments in software, online content, infrastructure technologies and semiconductors. Crystal Ventures has invested in 34 companies and has taken eight of these companies public.

Robert Williams, 1953 mechanical engineering

Robert C. Williams is receiving the inaugural College of Engineering Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition for his lifetime of achievement and contribution to industry. A native Cincinnatian, Williams graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from UC in 1953 and an MBA from Xavier University in 1957. While a student, he co-oped with Gardner Board and Carton Company in Middletown, Ohio. Williams and a partner took two unprofitable paper manufacturing facilities in Richmond, Va., created the James River Corporation, which expanded from a local firm with $4 million in annual sales to become a global giant in the paper industry with sales reaching nearly $8 billion. Williams established the Bob and Barbara Williams Leadership Scholarship for UC’s College of Engineering. Throughout his personal, family and business life, he has exemplified the aims and ideals of the College of Engineering exhibited in Dean Herman Schneider’s articles of faith—“Joining Theory and Practice, Linking Education and Industry, Through Knowledge and Experience.”

As a statement of the honor that these two alumni have brought to this university and this college, the College of Engineering has commissioned two original sculptures:

• The Herman Schneider Award is the work of Anna Christoforidis, and is a replica of the bust she created for the Schneider Quadrangle.
• The lifetime achievement award is an interpretation of the analemma (sunclock) which has been a feature of the Quadrangle since it was designed by Dr. Ronald Rosensweig and Mr. Hans Mueller, who graduated from UC in 1955. The analemma was interpreted and cast by a team from Casting Arts & Technology, a Cincinnati company that specializes in original sculptures.

The awards will be presented to the recipients at the May 16 banquet at the Hilton Cincinnati Netherland Plaza.
