The third-annual University of Cincinnati Admissions Duck Derby was held under bright sunny skies on August 22 at “University Pavilion Downs” – the fountain just outside the University Pavilion.

Staff members from Admissions, Financial Aid, One Stop and the Registrar’s Office competed for top duck honors as summer comes to an end and these offices gear up for the start of the academic year.

“It’s a great opportunity to get staff members together to have a little fun before we really get busy in a few weeks,” said Tom Canepa, associate vice president for Admissions, and organizer of the annual event.

Following several heats to advance to the finals, the winners this year were Randy Ulses (Financial Aid) in first place, Jenni Lansaw (Registrar’s Office) in second, and Dana Pawlowicz in third.

The “Best Dressed Duck” portion of the competition took place a few days before the races with several staff outfitting their ducks using a variety of materials.

As expected, the Olympic theme was prevalent, with the “Michael Pheathers” duck entry by Treva Hanseman taking top honors in the balloting by staff and Admissions visitors the morning of the races.

“It’s lots of fun for me to see the excitement generated by several yellow plastic ducks, water, and sunshine – it’s a summer tradition I look forward to,” Canepa says with a smile.
