Crime Prevention a Holiday Goal Once Again in Police-led Door Hanger Campaign
Crime prevention and public safety will once again be made a front-porch issue in neighborhoods around the University of Cincinnati on Dec. 6, when students and community volunteers join with the UC Police Department and the Cincinnati Police Department in the distribution of thousands of informational door hangers. An 'Urban Living 101' door hanger
This annual effort has made a dent in holiday season crime rates since its inception five years ago. Highlighting this year’s effort will be the added participation of the 33 members of the Cincinnati Police Department’s current recruit class.
"Statistical studies in the past have shown that these efforts to increase neighborhood awareness and vigilance have had quite an effect on crime rates in the areas we visit," says UC Police Capt. Karen Patterson, who is leading UC’s participation in the project. "We’re doing everything we can to make safety a top priority for our students and our neighbors, and our ongoing partnership with Cincinnati Police has only gotten stronger and helped show our concern about these issues."
The volunteers will be visiting houses in the Clifton Heights-University Heights-Fairview (CUF) neighborhoods, along with an increased presence this year in the Corryville area.
The door hangers offer tips on "Urban Living 101" that help students prevent common mistakes that open the door to crime while they are away on winter break. Information also addresses issues such as proper lighting for safe neighborhoods, the best ways to secure property and personal safety practices while out in the area.
The day will begin with an organizational session at 10 a.m. in the lobby of the UC Police Department, located in 3 Edwards Center on Corry Boulevard on campus. Teams of volunteers will be assigned streets to visit and, after the door hangers have been distributed, the event will end with a lunch for the volunteers at Mac’s Pizza on W. McMillan Street.
Volunteers who would like to help with this effort are always welcome. To volunteer or learn more information, contact Capt. Karen Patterson of UC Police at 513-623-0100 or Sgt. Jason Voelkerding of Cincinnati Police at 513-569-8506.
