The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music's (CCM) Department of Jazz Studies explores the work of composer and rock star Frank Zappa in concert this month. Known for his offbeat humor and anti-establishment attitude, Zappa's music was often beyond category. Under the direction of Dominic Marino, CCM Jazz presents “Mothers of Invention – The Music of Frank Zappa” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14 in UC's Patricia Corbett Theater.

An eight-piece ensemble dubbed the “CCM Zappa Combo” will perform Zappa's classic 1974 album Apostrophe (') in its entirety. Apostrophe (') for jazz combo was arranged by Marino and includes such recognizable tracks as “Don’t Eat the Yellow Snow” and “Uncle Remus.”

The CCM Jazz Lab Band will follow with arrangements of other Zappa tunes by Ed Palermo, leader of the Ed Palermo Big Band, which specializes in the iconoclast’s music. Selections will include “Peaches en Regalia,” “Night School,” “King Kong” and more.
