UC Advances in 'Open Doors' Ranking Related to Study Abroad
The new Institute for International Education
, out today, places the University of Cincinnati at
No. 37
nationally among the Top 40 doctorate-granting universities when it comes to sending students abroad for study or co-ops/internships.
The ranking is based on 2014-15 figures when UC sent 1,659 students overseas, to work and study in France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, China and other countries.
The year before, 2013-14, UC sent 1,370 students overseas and was ranked
No. 48
among doctorate-granting universities nationally.
Open Doors also rates UC at No. 19 nationally for the number of short-term study abroad opportunities offered among U.S. doctoral-level universities.
- While the Open Doors report is based on 2014-15 data, the most-recent figures from last year show that UCs momentum in providing study abroad opportunities is increasing. In the most recent 2015-16 academic year, 1,722 students traveled overseas for study or academic-associated co-ops or internships. This represents a 113 percent increase since the 2009-10 school year.

INCREASING NUMBERS OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS CHOOSE UC
According to the Open Doors report, UC is ranked No. 58 nationally in terms of the number of international students who opt to study at the university. In 2014-15, that number stood at, 3,932, up from 3,695 in 2013-14, an annual increase of 6.4 percent. From 2009 to 2015, UCs international student enrollment has increased 63 percent.
In a
global survey of international students
, UC is ranked top 50 worldwide and ninth in the nation for arrival activities, sports facilities, multi-faith provisions, virtual learning and other services.
- Among those key to serving international students at the university is Academic Director Ron Cushing of UC International. He recently received the 2016 Leo R. Dowling Award for Excellence from Region VI, National Association of Foreign Student Advisers (NAFSA): Association of International Educators. The award recognizes individuals who demonstrate compassion, integrity, and leadership in international education.

Before Katie Trauth Taylor worked with international organizations like NASA, Boeing and Hershey, and before receiving accolades for her work in the generative AI space, she was in a much different industry – English and literature. Taylor earned her master's in English and Comparative Literature in UC’s College of Arts and Sciences. She completed her educational journey at Purdue University with a doctorate degree in rhetoric and composition. After working as a graduate assistant at Purdue and UC, she became a research professor at Miami University. It might seem from there that her career was set—perhaps a tenured professorship or a university administrative position. That might have been her path, but Taylor had her eyes set on different goals. So how did Taylor transition from literature and composition to tech entrepreneurship? She enjoys sharing that part of her story.
