In what courses does AESS provide tutoring?

AESS generally targets but is not limited to providing tutoring in courses which are typically difficult for students such as:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • English
  • Foreign Language
  • Mathematics
  • Music History
  • Musicianship
  • Physics

Who are the tutors and how are they selected?

The AESS tutors are University of Cincinnati students of sophomore to graduate student status who have received an A or B in the content area in which they are tutoring. Upon completing a successful interview they receive a minimum of 4 hours of training before they begin tutoring.

How are tutors trained?

Tutors must complete a total of 10 hours of tutor training certified by the National Tutoring Association. Training topics include basic learning theory, learning styles, effective communication, diversity, etc.

Do the tutors provide answers to homework problems?

No. Tutors are properly trained on how to assist tutees with homework problems without giving answers. Our tutors act as a guide to assist the student in their independent learning.

Do tutees receive one-on-one tutoring or group tutoring?

Peer tutoring is a one-on-one tutoring session which takes place on the 1st level of University Pavilion. If a tutee is interested in group tutoring, Supplemental Instruction (SI) may be a better program.

If a student has failed a test, should I send him/her to AESS?

Please refer any student to AESS if he/she would benefit from tutorial services. Also consider the student may struggle with study skills in general and just not the subject matter in your course. You may also recommend the student contact AESS to schedule an appointment with Alsace Toure for Study Skills Advising.

If a student tells me that he/she went to the LAC but was given incorrect information, what should I do?

Please contact AESS Program Coordinator Mia Hunt at 513-556-3244. We would like to know about this situation as soon as possible so it can be addressed.

Is tutoring available during exam week?

No. Tutoring services are not open during exam week so tutors are given the opportunity to adequately prepare for exams.

Where is the AESS office located?
