RECYCLING/ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM - UC's History
As part of its environmental stewardship efforts, UC’s Recycling/Environmental Program recycles over 4,600 tons of recycled products annually. (View the Detailed Annual Recycling Statistics in PDF format). Facilities Management has also launched numerous energy management programs to meet the challenges of funding reductions, energy demands and environmental impacts.

History of Recycling at UC

1991 |
- Through a Department of Natural Resources grant, 8 thirty-yard recycling containers are purchased and installed
|
|
1992 |
- Compacted Cardboard recycling unit installed at MSB Dock
|
|
1996 |
- Facilities Management starts recycling white paper in three buildings. Efforts are expanded to include newspaper, aluminum cans, cardboard, plastics and glass
|
|
1997/1998 |
- $23,000 is spent on expanding recycling efforts
|
|
1998 |
- Earth Company (UC Student Group) places aluminum can recycling containers in 7 buildings, with student volunteers emptying them into central containers for pick up
|
|
1998 |
- Earth Company discontinues efforts and Facilities Management’s Moving Crew takes over, expanding to 27 locations
|
|
2003-2005 |
- 51 co-mingle containers placed throughout Main Street
|
|
2006 |
- 15 co-mingle containers placed throughout Varsity Village
|
|
2008 |
- Facilities Management purchased recycling containers for the student group "sed" that organized a voluntary recycling effort within the College of Design, Architecture, Arts, and Planning facilities.
- Working with a grant from the Hamilton County Solid Waste Management District, purchased 100 additional recycling containers to expanding the voluntary recycling effort on Uptown West Campus.

Current Recycling at UC
- 64 buildings currently are included in voluntary or funded mixed commingle or office paper recycling programs.
- Items currently recycled include: office paper, cardboard, newspaper, fluorescent light bulbs, skids, scrap metal, tires, batteries, oil, antifreeze, leaves, brush, trees, fly ash.
- 52 alternative fuel vehicles are currently maintained in the UC fleet, complying with the Energy Policy Act of 1992.
- Maintain representation in the LEEDS Committee and the Environmental Sustainability Committee.
