Maurice Jenkins a CCM student from Long Island talks explains why he traveled all the way from New York to attend UC;
“I was born and raised on Long Island. The music scene in NYC helped prepare me a lot for my education at UC. Being in close proximity to NYC, I had the opportunity to learn from some great teachers, and catch the occasional musical activity in the city such as jazz clubs, Broadway and more. As much as I have assimilated to Cincinnati, I feel that my roots are still in NY.
One summer during my sophomore year of high school, I attended the New York Summer Music Festival. I met a jazz trumpeter that attended CCM. When I started my college search I remembered what he said about CCM. What I like most about CCM is that it has the best parts of a conservatory, without sacrificing the quintessential college experience. I definitely made the right choice to attend UC. I’ve been involved with many organizations on campus. I’ve had the chance to participate in master classes from some of the best players of the world. And, I joined a New Orleans funk/pop jazz bass band. We get a lot of gigs that elude more conventional bands and musical groups. I’ve played in Mardi Gras Parades, the Reds’ Opening Day Parade, Oktoberfest and local music festivals in Cincinnati.”
