Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Since our Department was founded in 1970, its educational, clinical, and research activities have grown. Our residency program has a very broad range of experiences and teaching in all of the subspecialties. The program has been continually approved by the Accrediting Committee of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since its inception, and offers ACGME-approved fellowships in pain management, critical care, and pediatric anesthesia, as well as fellowships in cardiac anesthesia.
The Department of Anesthesiology at UC provides services for over 16,000+ anesthetics annually at The University Hospital in 28 anesthetic sites and 10 labor rooms, 3 birthing rooms, 4 birthing centers, and the Post Anesthesia Care Unit. University Hospital was again named one of the Top 15 Teaching Hospitals in the U.S. by Solucient and one of "America 's Best Hospitals" by U.S. News and World Report. Our programs in digestive disorders, otolaryngology, geriatrics, endocrinology, neurology, neurosurgery, pulmonary diseases, and urology rank in the Top 50 programs in the nation. In addition, The University Hospital is home to one of the few nationally-certified major adult burn treatment centers in the nation; the region's best-equipped and busiest Level I Trauma Center, and active kidney, liver, pancreas, and heart transplant programs.
Residents acquire their pediatric anesthesia training at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. U.S.News & World Report has ranked Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center the third best children’s hospital in the United States in general pediatrics in the 2008 edition of its annual "America’s Best Children’s Hospitals" rankings. The Pediatric Anesthesia Department at Cincinnati Children's performs over 25,000 anesthetics and 5,000 pain consults each year. Children's performs all types of surgeries, including cardiac, neurological, craniofacial, transplantation, and major spine operations. Cincinnati Children's anesthesia faculty is internationally recognized in anesthesia for premature infants, pediatric cardiac surgery, difficult airway problems, and chronic pain conditions.
Our residency provides state-of-the-art facilities, cutting edge NIH-funded research, focused didactics, and a wide range of advanced training. The intimate size of our residency program, coupled with the wide variety and high complexity of cases at UC, provides a unique learning experience for residents, which can be matched by few programs.
