The University Hospital
The University Hospital is a major
teaching hospital and regional referral center for many medical
specialties. It is one of a handful of centers in the world
which possess a neurosurgical operating suite equipped with
an open Hitachi MRI scanner, used for intraoperative diagnostic
scanning.
The University Hospital was named
one of "America's Best Hospitals" by U.S. News
and World Report in 2000. Opened in 1824, it was the first
hospital in the United States founded primarily for teaching
purposes. Today, it is part of the Health Alliance of Greater
Cincinnati. It has 665 beds and continues to be a major research
and education institution.
The University Hospital services
include: the Neuroscience
Institute, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Barrett
Cancer Center, the Burn Unit (one of the few nationally-certified
major adult burn treatment centers in the US) and the region's
best-equipped and busiest Level I Trauma Center. The
University Hospital's Transplant Center performs kidney,
liver, pancreas, and heart transplants.
