Train at UC  >  Chief Resident's Message
A word from the Chief Resident

As Chief Residents, we welcome your interest in UC's Anesthesia program. we would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some of the elements that you will experience if accepted into our program.

Didactics

Our Didactics consists of basic and advanced lecture series, weekly Grand Rounds, Problem Based Learning Discussions (PBLDs), Key Word Discussions and Mock Orals.  Our bi-monthly Journal Clubs provide a stimulating environment where the active participation of residents is highly encouraged and appreciated.

Calls

Residents are assigned to first and second call.  Post call days are off days for residents.

Rotations

During your first year, you rotate through OR, PACU, OB, Ortho, ENT and Pediatric Anesthesia. In your senior years you also rotate through cardiac and neuro anesthesia, SICU, acute and chronic pain service, and ambulatory anesthesia.

In-service exams, mock oral exams

Each July the residents take the ABA examination.   The exam is taken for ABA certification following graduation.  The residents at other levels take the same exam as an in-service exam. Every Monday mock oral examinations are given, which simulates discussion for the final ABA Oral Board Examination.

Evaluations

Your overall performance evaluation is based on daily evaluations from the attending staff you work with. In quarterly reviews, the program director advises you about what you should aim for in next quarter. Attending staff are evaluated by the residents monthly.

Paid time off

Personal paid time off (PTO) is 25 days (equivalent of 5 weeks) per year. Five PTO days are credited for use as sick leave. Additionally, each resident is allowed to attend a meeting or education seminar of their choosing once per year. Our department strongly encourages such activity by paying the travel, hotel accommodation and registration expenses up to $750 a year.
If you have questions that I might answer as a resident in the program, feel free to contact me by email.

Very best regards,
