Anesthesia
Clerkship (3rd year
rotation)
Medical Students at the University
of Cincinnati may choose to take the Anesthesia Clerkship
in their 3rd year of medical school. Clerkships are assigned
through a lottery system administered by the Dean's office.
The two-week clerkship includes both
clinical and didactic components. Medical students will
be assigned to the University Hospital or one of the area
hospitals. Please contact the Dean's office more details.
Anesthesia Elective
(4th Year Elective)
University of Cincinnati College of
Medicine, Department of Anesthesia, presents the fourth
year student with a wide variety of choices in the specialty
of anesthesia. The standard elective is 4 weeks; however,
the student can rotate from 2-8 weeks with prior approval.
The elective encompasses all aspects of general and regional
anesthesia: pre-operative evaluation and preparation, intra-operative
selection of anesthesia and management with emphasis on
the management of the unconscious patient, and post-operative
care of the patient.
The physiologic and pharmacologic knowledge
needed in the management of the acute care situation will
be stressed. Management of fluid and electrolyte problems
in general and those in pre-intra and post-operative period
will be discussed.
Further work will include improving
skills of manual dexterity in starting intravenous infusions,
selectively performing arterial punctures, lumbar punctures,
and tracheal intubation.
Special emphasis will be devoted to
improving the student's skills and knowledge in advanced
CPR.
Instruction will be on a one-to-one
basis. Progress will be determined between student and preceptor.
Didactic lectures and interactive session dealing with physiologic,
pharmacological and clinical situations are also stressed.
