The University Hospital School of Nurse
Anesthesia was founded in 1945, and is the fourth oldest
program nationally. The program of study was incorporated
into the Graduate Program of the College of Nursing at the
University of Cincinnati in the summer of 1991, and is fully
accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educational
Programs in Nurse Anesthesia. The major is offered through
the Adult Health Nursing Department.
Specialization in the major prepares
graduates for advanced nursing practice as a nurse anesthetist.
The program is 27 months in length. The curriculum includes
content and clinical experiences in general and regional
anesthesia techniques. Courses in the major focus on principles
of anesthesia practice, relevant chemistry, physics, and
pharmacology and related clinical practice and internships.
Clinical experiences take place in the University Hospital,
a Level I Trauma Center and High Risk Obstetrical Center,
the Cincinnati Veterans Medical Center, the Cincinnati Children's
Hospital Medical Center (which has the largest surgical
service of any children's hospital in the country), and
several community hospital including the Bethesda Hospitals,
Christ Hospital and Mercy Fairfield Hospital.
The College also offers a post-CRNA,
MSN option. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists holding
BSN degrees may apply to the College for master's degree
completion. Up to 60 credit hours of advanced standing may
be awarded. Forty-two additional quarter credit hours are
required for degree completion.
