Audience and Approach
All members of the UC faculty community are encouraged to attend. This workshop recognizes that many research ethical issues are relevant to a wide range of scholarly and creative activities. Participants will be introduced to the rationale, content, and resources necessary to provide a clear understanding of the elements necessary for developing, implementing, and improving education in the responsible conduct of research (RCR). To ensure the value of this program to a diverse audience, each session will include some lecture and a workshop format designed to result in concrete, discipline-specific strategies and plans.
Learning Objectives:
On successful completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
· List and describe a wide range of possible rationales and goals for research ethics instruction.
· List and describe topics that might be included in programs for research ethics instruction.
· Identify methods, approaches, tools, and resources to include the teaching of research ethics in the context of research.
· Identify methods, approaches, tools, and resources to incorporate the teaching of research ethics into the curriculum for research trainees.
· Locate resources for starting or enhancing research ethics instruction.
· Introduce research ethics into their mentoring and research groups, as well as into the curriculum, and
· Teach a course in research ethics for their department or discipline.

Dr. Francis Macrina, Vice President for
Research, Virginia Commonwealth
University. The author of one of the most
widely used texts (Scientific Integrity, ASM
Press) for teaching in this area. |
Drs. Michael Kalichman and Francis Macrina have both taught research ethics workshops throughout the country and consulted with local, state, national and international organizations on research ethics. They are both NIH-funded researchers who study various dimensions of research ethics. They are the Co-directors of the Research of Responsible Conduct of Research Education Committee, a subcommittee of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics.
