The purpose of the National Society of Pershing Rifles is to develop, to the highest degree possible, outstanding traits of leadership, military science, military bearing, and discipline, within the framework of a military-oriented, honorary fraternity.
Pershing Rifles (PRs) is a national organize that is committed to excellence. It is a brotherhood unlike any other and a place for cadets to find a home away from home.
Our company participates in many important events year round. Not only does E-1 get to fire the cannon at Bearcat football games and provide color guards for UC sporting events, but we also participate in parades, community service projects and conventions.
Pershing Rifles is open to any U.C. student. Membership in an ROTC program is not required. Prospective members must participate on a probationary term within a "pledge" class. Pledges are encouraged and may still become involved in PR events, but will not become active members until pledge class graduation. At that time, all new members are then inducted into the group.
The quotes below are from two notable alumni and basically sum up what pershing rifles is all about.
"The purpose of the Pershing Rifles is to foster a spirit of friendship and cooperation among men in the military department and to maintain a highly efficient drill company." - General John Joseph Pershing.
"For the first time in my life I was a member of a brotherhood," Colin Powell would later say about the Pershing Rifles. "The discipline, the structure, the camaraderie, the sense of belonging were what I craved. . . . I found a selflessness within our ranks that reminded me of the caring atmosphere within my family. Race, color, background, income meant nothing."
