Major  John Tyler was born and raised in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  He attended Homestead High School in Southwest Allen County. Upon graduation, he attended Indiana University (Fort Wayne Campus), earning a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in 1993.

Major Tyler enlisted in the US Army in 1994 as a Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) Crew Member.  He was assigned to Fort Sill, OK and achieved the rank of Sergeant in 1996.  He left the Army and returned to college in 1997 with a 2-year Army ROTC Scholarship at Indiana University/Purdue University in Indianapolis.  There he earned a Master of Public Affairs Degree and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery in 1999.

Following commissioning, then Lieutenant Tyler’s first assignment following the Officer basic Course at Fort Sill, OK, was with the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, Division Artillery, 3rd Infantry Division (Mechanized) at Fort Stewart, GA where he served as a Battery Executive officer.  He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 41st Field Artillery where he served as a Platoon Leader, Company Fire Support Officer, Assistant Brigade Fire Support Officer, and Battalion Intelligence Officer.  Following the Captains Career Course at Fort Sill, OK, Major Tyler was reassigned to Fort Sill in the 17th Field Artillery Brigade.  He was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery (MLRS) where he served as a Battalion Fire Direction Officer and Battery Commander.  Following Battery Command in 2007, then Captain Tyler was assigned to The Joint Forces Command, Brunssum in The Netherlands as a Support Battalion S-3 in support of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) mission.  In 2010, Major Tyler was reassigned to the Command General Staff College (CGSC) at Fort Leavenworth, KS where he attended the Intermediate Level Education (ILE) course.  In 2011, Major Tyler was reassigned to the 10th Mountain Division (Light) at Fort Drum, NY.  While there, he served as a Division Fire Support Officer, 2nd Brigade Combat Team Fire Support Officer, Security Force Advise and Assist Team Executive Officer, and Battalion S-3.  

Major Tyler has six deployments including two with 3ID (Operation Joint Guardian – Kosovo 2001 and Operation Iraqi Freedom I in 2003), one with 5/3 FA at Fort Sill (Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07 in 2006), one with JFC Brunssum (Operation Enduring Freedom 10 – Afghanistan in 2010), and two with 10th MTN DIV (LI) (Operation Enduring Freedom 2011 and 2013) Currently, Major Tyler is assigned as the Assistant Professor of Military Science and Battalion Executive Officer at the University of Cincinnati Army ROTC program.

Major Tyler’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Field Artillery Order of Saint Barbara.

He and his wife Jennifer have two sons, Jacob and Joshua, one daughter, Jessica, and a Maltese puppy, Liberty.
