History
of Company E-1
University of Cincinnati
On 21 December 1934, the University of Cincinnat
drill team received a charter as Co. H, 1st Regiment,
National Society of Pershing Rifles. Reorganization
of the Society caused H Co. to be redesignated
E Co.
E Company was, as were all Pershing Rifle units,
disbanded at the start of World War II. In 1946,
the Society was reinstated. Not until 3 Feb 1948
was E Co. grandted a new charter.
Until 1973, E Co. acted out of a building located
at 228 Calhoun Street. The structure was affectionately
known as the "Gray Alamo." It was a
three story house with a basement and a sub-basement,
later referred to as the "Hell Hole".
In 1973, the building was torn down to make room
for additional parking.
The PRs took up residence at the UC Rifle Range.
A large room was partitioned into offices. The
Company remained there until it was again moved
in 1977.
Over the next two years, the PRs were shuffled
through the old library and into the basement
of Teacher's College. In 1984, the Army ROTC
program was granted use of Shmiddlapp Hall until
CCM
could renovate it.
In March of 1990 the 11th and 1st Regiments
mereged and UC PRs were renamed Company E-1.
Also in late March, the Honor Guard from E-1
placed first at the John J. Pershing Memorial
Drill Meet.
At the end of the 1992 school year, the Army
and Air Force ROTC programs were both relocated
to Artlett Hall. In the middle of the next school
year, the members of E-1 brought home two Third
place trophies from the National Drill Meet.
The trophies were won for Color Guard and Individual
Drill Knockout.
In early 2003, the Army and Air Force were once
again moved, this time to Edwards One, as Artlett
Hall was torn down. In the Spring of 2005, our
new facility on the corner of Dennis St. was
completed. This is our current area of operations.
