"I am in my mid-60's, and a year ago contacted U.C. Rec Center staff requesting a referral to a personal trainer experienced in working with my age group. (My trainer) was always upbeat, punctual, and seemed personally interested not only in how my training was progressing, but also with how my life was going in general. She took the time to understand what my goals and motivations were for training and personalized my training accordingly. She provided ample positive reinforcement for both my strengths at the initial assessment and for skills later acquired through training sessions; but at the same time without sounding critical could point out areas in which further training and improvement were indicated. "I'm 65. I decided to make use of the Recreation Center. I started by using regularly the swimming pool, but wanted to improve my swimming. I also could see that the Recreation Center was well equipped, but didn't know how to use the machinery, and was frightened to use them by myself, due to recurring problems with my shoulders. Being a surfer in France, this point was crucial to me.
(My trainer) has been exactly the person I was looking for. She first helped me to determine my goals. We established a program for trainings which we followed step by step. I was so satisfied with her ability that after the three sessions initially planned, I asked for five + five more.
I am very satisfied with the way each session was precisely planned, wether in the private training room, in the general training room, or in the swimming pool. As a trainer, she was altogether precise in her commandment, attentive to the way movements were done, showing, encouraging and demanding.
The results she obtained are yet astonishing me : I can swim a much faster, efficient and relaxing free style, and have improved my breast-stroke. I have been taught the way to use each and every machine, which could improve the condition of my shoulders, abdominalsl, and legs. I have been able to use (machines) afterward by myself, without hurting myself, and improving every time on the previous session. The most obvious and simple sign of that improvement has been my ability to do the multiple push-ups, squats, and other movements as needed in a normal surf session, which I was not able to do anymore before those training sessions.
The most important ability has been her capacity not only to have me do things, but to explain them, make sure I knew how to do them, and that I would be, afterwards, able to do them by myself. This is, I think, the substance of good teaching."
