CDC Announces a Diversity Essay Competition for UC Students

The Career Development Center annually conducts a Diversity Recruiting Training Institute (DRTI) to assist employers in meeting their college recruiting goals, especially as it relates to diversity.  Since 2007 a major part of DRTI has been the involvement of UC students who have shared their perspectives of the kind of employers they seek to work for, who have been most responsive to their career interest.  Students have provided valuable insights to employers on how they feel about organizations’ diversity commitments and how this impacts their desire to work for that organization.

Employers attending DRTI have found this segment of the UC Diversity Recruiting Training Institute to be particularly instructive and consider this to be a segment that distinguishes the UC Institute from many other diversity programs that employers attend in a given year.

For the 2008 DRTI, an actual video was created to capture student voices and to strengthen the impact of their message on participating employers.  Students were randomly selected and represented ethnic, gender, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation and many other facets of diversity.

In preparation for DRTI 2009, CDC is launching a Diversity Essay Competition for junior and senior students at the University of Cincinnati.  CDC is searching for diverse students who can provide insights to employers on how they can more effectively recruit for diversity on college campuses.  This essay contest seeks juniors and seniors who can describe in 300 words or less what employers can or should do to attract the best and brightest, diverse students, as part of their recruiting strategy on college campuses nationwide.

UC students interested in the Diversity Essay Competition are encouraged to visit employer websites and identify their diversity mission statements and diversity commitments or objectives to better understand the importance of diversity for today’s progressive organizations.  This review should assist students in formulating their ideas of what employers should do, to more effectively recruit for diversity on college campuses.  Only UC juniors and seniors are eligible for this Diversity Essay Competition and interested students are encouraged to start writing now to submit your outstanding essays by the deadline.

To participate in this competition, UC juniors and seniors must register for the competition and submit your essay between February 1st, 2009 and March 15th 2009.  See Diversity Essay Registration Form below.  Selected essays (in whole or part) will be published in the 2009 DRTI Fact Book which is distributed to all employing organizations attending the 2009 Diversity Recruiting Training Institute.

A team of judges will determine the top 5 Essay winners.  Other Diversity Essay Competition award incentives for the winners will be announced later.

The Career Development Center welcomes Employers interested in sponsoring this competition.
