Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is any experience where students learn by taking on responsible roles as workers in organizations and observing and reflecting on what happens while they are there.  Experiential learning not only helps the student in their intellectual and emotional development, but also with their career development as they work in their potential career area and learn more about the world of work.

Experiential learning takes on many forms.  Opportunities for experiential learning can be full or part-time, paid or non-paid.  They may be for one summer or an entire academic year.  Experiential learning can take place in any organization, be it a corporation or nonprofit agency.  What separates experiential learning from other work or volunteer experiences is the intentional learning agenda that the intern and the employer share and its results.  Discussed below are the different forms of experiential learning:

Internships    Internships are, according tot he National Society for Experiential Education, "any carefully monitored work experience, in which an individual has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what s/he is learning throughout the experience."

Service Learning    Service Learning Programs are those in which students contribute valuable services to an organization (usually nonprofit) or a community, in which learning occurs and is facilitated by program directors or the like, in credited courses or programs.

Field Study/Practicums    Field studies or practica are work experiences that are usually needed to complete a degree and are awarded academic credit.  Many are oriented toward professional training.

  • To create/promote an experiential learning opportunity at your site, contact Arthur Walton at 513-556-0316.

Website Presence

CDC's website provides graduating students with information about your recruiting activity prior to your visit. This information includes your organization's name, the date of your visit, the positions for which you will be recruiting, and the majors and degree levels of the students you wish to interview. Our homepage is fast becoming students' main source of information about who is recruiting, when, and for what positions and other relevant information about CDC services.  If you would like to become a CDC website sponsor, please contact us via email at CDC@uc.edu.

The Career Resources @ CDC

The Career Development Center has a comprehensive career resource area where employer information on disc, on video and hard copy are assembled and filed with other job market data and career exploration resources. Resources include national salary data to assist you in making competitive offers to desired candidates.

Employers are encouraged to forward all available company information for use ar Career Resources @ CDC, especially if they are planning to recruit on campus. Such information is extremely valuable to students preparing for their job interviews. Company literature should be forwarded to The Career Development Center (Attention: Career Resources @ CDC) as close as possible to your scheduled on-campus recruiting date.

We encourage you to visit our library and check the current status of your literature and other resources when you are on campus.
