What
Can I Do with a Major in...Computer Science?
Computer Science
Description of Major
Computer Science is devoted to the search for new theories and
strategies for improving software development. Computer Science also
encompasses such fields as web development, network management, system
analysis and programming, as well as software development and
maintenance.
Computer science is the study of computer software. It studies
methods of representing, organizing, and manipulating information. It
is concerned with ways to solve problems more efficiently and with
ways to simulate human reasoning.
Objectives in this Field of Study
- To provide students with a solid foundation in the
key principles and practices of computing in solving science,
engineering and business problems.
- To prepare graduates for employment in the
computing-based professions, and for post-baccalaureate education
in computer science and engineering.
Career Options
A computer science graduate can pursue careers relevant to
applications programming, web programming, network management, systems
analysis, systems programming, and software development and
maintenance. These opportunities exist in industry, government,
medicine, business, and many other fields. Potential employers include
companies using the computer to support their work and companies
dedicated to software development. Students who wish to pursue
research careers in computer science should continue to study at the
graduate level.
The Professional Practice Program for computer science students
consists of four to six quarters of work in a position related to
computer science. Students normally apply for this program in the
spring quarter of the freshman year.
