Curriculum
Vitae
The
Curriculum Vitae - the "CV" - is the traditional resume for
academics. The CV also is used in other professions such as
laboratory research and medicine. If you are applying to graduate
school, or for a position in an academic setting, the CV format is the
most familiar to those evaluating your application.
The
major differences between the CV and other formats are:
- The CV does not normally
include a career objective statement.
- Unlike the standard resume,
personal pronouns are acceptable.
- The CV is expected to
include references.
- The length of the CV is
open-ended; in fact, brevity is not usually desirable.
- CVs often contain more
categories; experience may be divided into Research and Teaching.
- The CV includes descriptions
of research projects and dissertations.
This
is an example CV of a graduate student seeking a faculty position:

EDUCATION
Ph.D. in Philosophy, University of Cincinnati, expected
June 2001
Dissertation: Humean Ethics Revisited
Advisors: William Edwards, Morris Lansky, Richard
Robertson
My dissertation is a sympathetic reanalysis of Hume's
ethics from a contemporary
perspective that incorporates Rawlsian concepts and a
neo-feminist construct of the
meaning of 'the good'. The defense is scheduled
for April, 2001. I anticipate several
publishable papers to be developed from the
dissertation within the next 18 months.
