What to include in a resume, what it's really for, how to handle references.

 PURPOSE FOR WRITNG A RESUME

  • TO GET AN INTERVIEW!
  • To target a specific job requiring specific skills
  • To market your demonstrated skills, experience and  strengths
  • To promote your qualifications, personal qualities and related interests
  • To document your education, certifications, licensure and professional achievements

CONTENTS OF A RESUME

  • IDENTIFICATION - name, address, phone, email
  • Career Objective - logical and meaningful statement describing in a concise manner one’s immediate and
    possible long-range career goals.  Use as specific a title as possible without being too restrictive.
  • EDUCATION

                    ∗ Institutions

                    ∗ Degrees, years granted

                    ∗ GPA - if applicable

                    ∗ Major and minor, optional

                    ∗ Course emphasis - if applicable

                    ∗ Vocational training - if applicable to job

                    ∗ Means of financing education - if applicable

  • WORK EXPERIENCE – what, where, when

                    ∗ Full-time work

                    ∗ Part-time work

                    ∗ Volunteer work if related to job search

                    ∗ Internships, practicum’s, professional experience

  • SPECIAL SKILLS (optional)

                    ∗ Skills relating to career objective and/or to job target
