Ohio Campus Compact, a statewide nonprofit coalition of 40 college and university presidents and their campuses working to promote and develop the civic purposes of higher education, sponsors the Pay it Forward Program, which addresses critical economic needs by embedding philanthropic themes in a variety of courses across the academic curriculum. The program has been implemented in a variety of disciplines including psychology, sociology, education, criminal justice, business, marketing, communications, accounting, art, English, medicine, public relations, urban studies, nursing, social work, economics and more.
During the 2017-2018 academic year, Ohio Campus Compact supported nine courses at the University of Cincinnati through generous funding from the Elizabeth Ricci Family Fund of The Greater Cincinnati Foundation. Each participating course received $1,000 – $500 from Ohio Campus Compact and a $500 match from the University – to award up to two local charitable organizations as chosen by the class. Students in the courses identified community needs and researched the nonprofit sector to select organizations that meet those needs. Students then issued and evaluated requests for funding proposals and engaged in a group decision-making process to award funds. Most students also volunteer with the charitable organizations during the course. In addition to incorporating philanthropy education, faculty infused service learning as part of the course content.
