Horticulture Program

Horticulture began when man first started cultivating plants for food and medicine. It is an art as old as the hanging gardens of Mesopotamia and a science as new as tomorrow. Horticulture studies the development, growth, and distribution of ornamental plants, fruits and vegetables as well their utilization in our landscapes. Gardens enrich our lives aesthetically; they can be utilitarian; they produce nutritious, flavorful food; and they can heal us through experiencing them or caring for them. Horticulture is both an avocation and a vocation.

The Horticulture Program at CAS is unique because we are an evening and week-end program. We offer a Bachelor of Science degree in horticulture in which our students may elect to follow either a scientific track or a business track.

We offer three certificate programs. Certificates require thirty hours and may be earned separately or combination with a baccalaureate degree.

We welcome the home gardener interested in just one or two courses for self-improvement, Master Gardeners interested in additional education, or those who are working in the green industry or want to work in the green industry and recognize the career opportunities opened by completion of a certificate or full degree. This program is designed to be flexible and to address the needs of today’s horticulture industry. You will find our faculty are enthusiastic, well-qualified and experienced in their fields.

In the Horticulture Program at the College of Applied Science you will learn the plants, the art and the science of horticulture. Career opportunities in the green industry are excellent. Career areas include environmental landscape, turfgrass and grounds management, landscape design, commercial greenhouse, public and private parks and garden.
