AET Program Objectives & Outcomes

Description of the AET Program

The Architectural Engineering Technology Program leads to a Bachelor of Science degree. The program synthesizes the aesthetic, technical, and functional elements of building design and construction. The underlying philosophy of the program is to prepare graduates to work with architects and the supporting engineering disciplines of structural, mechanical, and electrical engineers. The academic focus of the program is applied technology in construction project delivery systems - how to coordinate and manage the production of construction drawings, specifications, and other related documents. Coursework emphasizes professional communication and decision-making processes that enable the successful integration of the construction disciplines.

The Architectural Engineering Technology degree is accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC-ABET). If an AET graduate intends to pursue state registration as a professional architect, then upon graduation he or she should apply to an NAAB accredited professional degree program in architecture, the Master's of Architecture (M' Arch).

The Professional Practice Cooperative Education Program (co-op) is an important component of the Architectural Engineering Technology degree . The co-op program places students in paid work study positions with professional firms for six or seven quarters between the freshman and senior years. This co-op component requires five years to earn a baccalaureate degree. A four year BS' AET is also available with fewer co-op practice requirements.

The two year Architectural Technology program interests those students who seek careers in the residential design market. This program leads to an Associate of Science degree. Two quarters of co-op and six quarters of academic study are required for this degree. Degrees are granted in either August or December.

The Construction Science department also offers a dual degree. In six years a successful graduate can achieve Bachelor of Science degrees in both Architectural Engineering Technology and Construction Management.

Admission Requirements

An applicant to the program is eligible for admission to the Construction Science Department upon meeting the minimum criteria for admission to the College of Applied Science and must also be in the upper half of his or her high school graduation class. The applicant must also have achieved a minimum score of 580 or 27 on the mathematics sections of the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT), respectively. A transfer student should also meet these admission criteria and have achieved a 2.50 cumulative grade point average for all previous college work. More information regarding College of Applied Science admission requirements can be found in the college bulletin.
