Through continued improvement in teaching, research, professional activity and significant involvement in actual design and construction, and through the implementation of the Construction Innovation Center and graduate level course work related to the Master's Degree in Business Administration/Concentration in Construction Management, the Department shall help set the local and national agendas for college level construction related education.

Mission

The Department's central mission is to prepare men and women for productive and rewarding careers in the broad design/construct/maintain arena through implementation of sound curricula and practical co-operative experience in viable settings. This mission requires that the faculty remain abreast of theory, application and industrial developments, through leadership in research and publication and through engaging the work and ideas of other educators and practitioners. Specific to the Construction Management Program, students shall be prepared to function at all levels of construction administration and shall be equipped to grow in their respective professional lives.

Department Goals

  • To provide a stimulating academic environment for students, faculty and staff in which learning, personal growth and professional development are maintained as high priorities.
  • To provide a broad educational experience with an emphasis on the arts and humanitiesto prepare students for life long learning.
  • To provide the best possible career oriented education, including technical and management course work.
  • To continue to develop the theory and the integration of the design/construct/maintain continuum.
  • To maintain a collegial atmosphere in which students and faculty learn from each other.
  • To provide advice and leadership for industry, other institutions, and professional associations.
  • To further develop the Construction Innovation Center (C.I.C.) as a recognized agency for the generation and dissemination of functional information.
  • To promote the concept that engineering, architecture and construction are all professional activities with equal and interactive importance.
  • To emphasize the ethics of professional practice through class discussions, special seminars, and faculty behavior.

Department Objectives

  • The faculty shall continually improve the design, execution and integration of the curricula by evaluating feedback from students, faculty and industry at the conclusion of each course.

  • The faculty shall provide disciplined courses which help improve students' learning, development, competencies and career preparation and shall use a traditional grading system as a measurement of accomplishment.
  • The faculty shall provide personal attention and advice to students by being available at least four scheduled office hours per week.
  • The faculty shall focus on problem solving and communications by requiring two or more of the following components in all departmental courses: mathematically based logic problems, student projects, case studies, written papers, presentations, demonstrations or computer solutions.
  • All students shall be competent with computers as demonstrated by senior projects.
  • The faculty shall implement graduate courses within the MBA/CM concentration.
  • The faculty and the Professional Practice Department shall maintain an outcome assessment program by an annual survey of students and employers.
  • Faculty, students and the Professional Practice Department shall continue to improve co-operative education as measured by quarterly employer and student evaluations.
  • Faculty shall maintain excellent industrial relations through individual contact with   practitioners, on-the-job presence, applied research, committee participation, speaking engagements and outreach efforts, and shall report such activities to the department head quarterly.
  • Each faculty member shall successfully achieve at least one research project, refereed published article, conference presentation or significant industrial experience per academic year.
  • The faculty and the College Admissions Department shall attract a departmental student body in which all matriculated students are in the upper halves of their high school graduating classes or have SAT composite scores of 950 or ACT composite scores of 23, or a college level accumulative grade point average of 2.5 for transfer students.
