ABC Team Captures 2 Firsts

''Our team of students participating in the ABC National Construction Management Competition performed great - scheduling is first place in the nation and safety is first place in the nation,'' -stated Mousa Gargari, interim department head for the College of Applied Science Construction Science department.

Twenty six schools were competing in the annual competition sponsored by Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc at their convention at the Caribe Hilton & Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Claiming first place positions in two of the three categories requires attention to detail, a lot of pre-competition work, and teamwork.

The team of eight began working months before when contest specifications for completion of the Lawson Ridge Retail Center were released to contending schools. The Lawson Ridge Retail Center is a 66,000 square foot, single story center with three retail spaces. One of the spaces was already completed. The team's task was to complete the center.

Functioning as the project's general contractor, the team managed pouring and finishing the remaining concrete, handled exterior and interior blocking, installing door and window frames, and all tasks needed for the center to become fully ready for commercial leasing. Once the tasks were identified and detailed, the team used the RS Main data base of prices to determine which tasks they would self-perform and which would be bid to subcontractors.

These determinations are critical as they drive the team's responses during the active bidding process during the opening day of competition and establish the framework for the project management plan, its completion schedule, the safety plan and eventually the cost.

"The ABC Competition takes everything you've learned and multiplies it," claims Jessi Metzger, CM Senior and Team Leader. Opening day - bid day is crunch time! During the course of the morning bids pour in from potential subcontractors to four of the team. These are evaluated on the spot and key data forwarded to the remaining team members who analyze and examine the impact to the original plans.

Once subcontractor bidding completes at 1:00 PM, the teams race to set their final bids to complete the project. Subcontractor bids often change initial decisions on doing tasks using your own workers, the materials selected, or even the approach to completing that portion of the project. In just 3 hours the team sets the final schedule, select the subcontractors, and adjust the project and safety plans.

Final bids must be in the judges' hands by 4:00 PM. Late entries are disqualified... "Exactly as it is in the real world... Bid submission times are usually absolute for general contractors and you have to get it right," states George Sucharieh, CM Professor and ABC Team Faculty Advisor.

Top schedule and safety plans made this year's competition one to remember.
