President Zimpher brings Report Card to CAS

President Nancy Zimpher visited the college on Wednesday (11/7/07) to discuss the latest UC|21 Report Card, solicit input from the faculty and staff on the metrics used and take questions on a wide variety of topics.

Throughout her address, President Zimpher stressed that higher education faces increased calls for accountability, affordability and access. In an effort to be more accountable and transparent, the report card this year offers more quantitative measures for all six UC|21 goals.

Most of the measures show significant progress, but the report card does include up arrows (progress), down arrows (progress needed) and sideways arrows (progress emerging). Among the up arrows is total enrollment, which reached a 16-year high in fall 2007 and is expected to increase again next fall. Other achievements include the university’s first tuition freeze in 30 years, which took effect this fall as a part of a state agreement. The UC agreement with Metro is exceeding expectations as many students, faculty and staff are using free bus rides to commute to and from campus. The President’s Cabinet has been expanded to include representatives from student government. UC continues to gain accolades in the press and enhanced rankings, making the 2008 best colleges list in the Princeton Review for the first time ever.

Close to home, UC is engaged financially, through endowment investments, in the nearby Uptown neighborhoods and is committed from a service standpoint to the community. Moreover, the university is “going green” as the university has signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment and the campus now has three buildings certified as high-performance “green” buildings in construction and operation.

Enrollment isn’t all that is up at UC. Retention or keeping students enrolled and on-track for graduation is also up, and UC ranks in the Top 100 colleges for National Merit Scholars.

All-in-all a solid report.
