Senior Design

About the Project

Each MET Senior (or team) selects a problem to solve, researches the current trends including patents, develops alternative solutions, and selects the best design based on sponsor and engineering criteria. The design calculations and drawings are done and the bill of materials developed. The prototype is built and tested and a report is submitted detailing the results of the entire process.

Schedule

The selection and research are done from September to December. The design is completed by March and the prototype is tested by May. The prototype is displayed at the Technology Expo at the College in May each year.

Sponsor Involvement

The sponsor will submit a problem to be solved and designate a contact person. The student(s) will submit the research including the budget for approval. The budget will cover the cost of building and testing the prototype which the sponsor will own upon completion. The student(s) will submit reports of progress at appropriate intervals by e-mail or fax to the sponsor in order to ensure satisfaction. In some cases, complex parts or processes may be required which the sponsor can offer but the student(s) must supply shop drawings. The research phase will specify resources not available at the University.

Cost to Sponsor

The only costs to the sponsor are the direct costs incurred by the student(s) in developing the design and building and testing the prototype. These typically include materials, components, manufacturing and testing costs for the prototype, and supplies, reproduction costs, long-distance telephone calls, on-line search fees, and travel expenses for mandatory site-visits.

Your project will be offered for selection to the Seniors. If it is selected, the student(s) will contact you by Oct. 1.
