Math-Physics Learning Center

Dear Student,

As you complete your mathematics requirements, I encourage you to take advantage of the many services offered by the Math-Physics Center here at the college. The Math-Physics Center provides a supportive environment outside the classroom where you can work together with your classmates on your homework, get help with your homework from faculty or student tutors, review for an upcoming exam, use the computer for mathematics, and have access to solution manuals, other textbooks, and video tapes. We are here to assist you in being a successful mathematics student. Visit us soon and come back often.

Sincerely,

Sandra Franz
Math-Physics Center Coordinator

YOUR MPLC

Welcome to the CAS Math-Physics Center. The Center is staffed by faculty and student tutors. You are invited to see Professor Sandra Franz or to come to the Center for specific information regarding any of the services offered. Feel free to work directly with the staff if you have any questions or you need to locate any materials. The Center is located on the third floor of the Administration Building in room 311. The phone number is 556-5013.

Individual and small group tutoring assistance is available on a walk-in basis. Tutors assisting in the Math-Physics Center are members of the Math Department faculty or are outstanding math students who have been recommended by their professors.

There are many instructional and supplemental materials on reserve in the Math-Physics Center. A list of available materials is posted on the wall above the bulletin board. All materials are for use in the Center. See a staff member to check out materials; a valid photo ID is required.

Answer books and solution manuals are available for the textbooks used in math courses at OCAS. Arrangements to copy materials may be made. Check with a staff member for details. Coin copiers are available in the Library.

A variety of supplemental textbooks and problem books are also on reserve. The Math-Physics Center is developing an extensive reference area comprised of textbooks covering a wide range of courses and supplemental topics. The reference area is located in the back of the Center (on the bookshelves). You may freely use these materials in the Center, and are asked to return the books to their proper location before leaving. Schaum's Outline series are included in this area.

Several videotape series are available for viewing in the Math-Physics Center for reviewing topics in pre-algebra, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. The list of available videos is located on the bulletin board. See a staff member to check out a video.

The Math-Physics Center houses three IBM-compatible computers for use in completing math computer assignments or to provide access to computer-aided instruction. There is a variety of math-related software available on our Pentium II-266 computers. TI-89 graphing calculators are also available for student use. See a staff member for assistance.

Problem help sessions are open question and answer problem solving reviews for particular courses. The sessions are scheduled on a weekly basis throughout the quarter. Review sessions are scheduled based on faculty availability and student interest. Announcements of special review sessions are posted on the Math-Physics Center bulletin board, the Math Department bulletin board on the fourth floor of the Administration Building and on bulletin boards in student commons areas. Scheduled review sessions will also be announced in math classes. Watch for announcements of other special sessions and workshops.

The schedule for the Math-Physics Center varies depending on the schedule of math classes each quarter. The Center will be open on a limited basis during the first week of each quarter while schedules are being finalized. By the start of the second week of classes the Math-Physics Center will open on its regular schedule for the quarter. The schedule of hours for the quarter will be posted on the Math-Physics Center door, the Math Department bulletin board on the fourth floor of the Administration Building and on bulletin boards in student commons areas. The schedule will also be announced in math classes. We invite you to take advantage of the many services offered by your Mathematics-Physics Center.
