Tech Expo is our annual celebration of excellence in technology education. Our seniors are showcasing their capstone projects. Many of our industry partners are joining us to exhibit their newest capabilities and energy solutions, while high schools in the Tech Prep Consortium are displaying their award winning efforts. Applied Science faculty and staff are driving Applied Science enrollment past the 2010 goal set for the fall of 2010. The UC Admissions enrollment model predicts our total enrollment for fall of this year to be 2014 – a one third growth in just two years. Fall’s entering class will exceed this year’s record class with even more students, who boast even stronger credentials with more Cincinnatus scholars.

Our focus on scholarship was intensified this year as we recognized scholar-athletes from across the university who demonstrated success both in competition and in class. We are proud to have seen two Applied Science scholar-athletes honored – All-American volleyball standout Jessica Nevitt and Lacrosse defender Lauren Kelly.

In its second year Applied Science Technology Scholars Program awarded ten scholarships of $6,000 each to high school seniors at half-time of the UC – West Virginia basketball game. One Applied Science Tech Scholar, Grant Weldon from Turpin High School, scored a perfect 36 on his SAT and a second, Alexander Morrison, is joining us from Louisville’s Central High School where he is a standout basketball guard on their runner-up state championship team.

Alex and his parents got a second surprise on award night as they learned that Louisville lies within the UC Metro Area definition that Applied Science has embraced for the fall. Students living within the Metro area’s 28 Kentucky counties and 14 Indiana counties can attend Applied Science at Ohio tuition rates plus $10.00 per credit hour. This is a savings of more than $13,000 per year for these students. We expect the Metro Rate to significantly boost our enrollment from these neighboring counties.

Quality in our instruction and programs evidences itself every year as our graduates claim positions with firms across the country and our students excel in competitions across campus and around the nation. Our Culinology® Team reclaimed the gold medal at the RCA National Student Competition. This is the third straight year our food scientists have medaled in this competition. Not bad for a program in its third year!

In construction, our ABC Competition Team took second place in the National Student Competition at the Associated Builders and Contractors Annual Conference last month and we look for another strong showing in the 2009 Collegiate BattleBot Competition in a few weeks as our team defends the championship won last year.

IT students Emily Morgan and Shadi Debbini are now on co-operative work assignments with the university’s UCit organization as part of a unique scholarship-work package. They won their scholarships in a campus wide competition and as usual Applied Science students are recognized for their writing in contests across the university.

While our new programs in Hospitality & Facilities Management and Sport Administration are off to a good start, our growth is primarily in the STEM disciplines – science, technology, engineering, and math. The state of Ohio continues to stress the significance of STEM in education and as a principal driver for economic expansion for Ohio and the tri-state. This emphasis together with an increasing awareness of Applied Science as a quality STEM education resource by prospective students, their parents, potential employers and the community are carrying Applied Science to record levels.

Applied Science strength in applied science, technology and practical engineering is being coupled with the research and prestige of the College of Engineering to produce a STEM powerhouse. The new college will be the university’s second largest with resources to sustain continued growth and the programs needed to lead economic expansion in southwestern Ohio and the tri-state. Tech Expo and the second annual Energy Conference provide a glimpse of our combined leadership and what will be coming. Energy, its use, conservation and generation, are on display in projects ranging from a Super High Mileage Vehicle to solar lights and lawnmowers. Energy is also the focus of a program of concurrent sessions on topics such as Green Jobs Impact, Building Sustainability, Career Paths in Energy, and Alternative Energy. Energy and technology are keys to the future.
