Communication Lab
The Communication Lab is both a location and a concept.
Located in French 3622 W, the Speech Lab houses audio-video equipment: tape recorders, a VCR, and computers to access both the internet and systems for video and sound recordings. The space can be adapted to meet the needs of individuals or small groups. Since the Lab is used only under faculty supervision or by special arrangement, Lab hours vary .Current schedules are posted by the door. Students and faculty are encouraged to use the Lab on a drop-in basis or, if desired, by reserving a specific time by signing the chart on the Speech Lab door.
The Speech Lab concept is intrinsic to the design of CAT’s Communication for College and Career. Students work in the Lab to complete individual and/or group projects that supplement the activities planned for the classroom. These assignments expand the scope of the course as well as provide additional instruction for those experiencing difficulties with classroom assignments. Also, taped Lab exercises allow the instructors to provide one-to-one feedback beyond scheduled office hours.
Exciting uses for the Speech Lab extend beyond the traditional classroom. Initial projects to create electronic portfolios have begun. Lab instructors have provided useful feedback for students and faculty planning oral presentations English as a Second Language projects could take advantage of the equipment and personnel in the Lab. Current Speech Lab personnel would be most interested in facilitating the use of the Speech Lab by any interested CAT student or faculty member.
