42-MATH-091: Elementary Algebra I (4 ug. credits)
- A review of arithmetic operations involving: integers, fractions, and percents. Topics include: number sense, solving linear equations and inequalities. Problem solving is emphasized.
Prereq.: Mandatory placement based on Mathematics placement exam.

42-MATH-092: Elementary Algebra II (4 ug. credits)
- Topics from probabilities and statistics, graphs, linear equations, systems of equations and inequalities, exponents, polynomials and scientific notation.
Prereq.: 42-MATH-091 or placement.

42-MATH-101: Elementary Algebra III (4 ug. credits)
- Factoring, simplifying rational expressions, working with radicals, solving rational, radical, and quadratic type equations, graphs.
Prereq.: 42-MATH-092 or placement.

42-ENGL-095: Preparatory Reading and Writing I (6 ug. credits)
- An integrated course to help students develop proficiency in reading and writing. The writing component stresses sentence and paragraph level skills, using experiential writing. The reading component stresses the comprehension skills of understanding literal facts and concepts, main and supporting ideas.
Prereq.: Mandatory placement based on results of the Language Arts placement exam.

42-ENGL-097: Preparatory Reading and Writing II (6 ug. credits)
- A more advanced integrated effort to help students develop proficiency in reading and writing. The writing component stresses basic essay writing skills, using narrative and expository writing, including response to text. The reading component stresses the comprehension skills of interpretation and analysis. This course is designed to be taken concurrently with 42-COMM-098.
Prereq.: 42-ENGL-095 or mandatory placement based on results of the Lang. Arts placement exam. Coreq.: 42-COMM-098

42-ENGL-101B: English Composition I Bridge (6 ug. credits)
- Students placed into English 101B receive intensive instruction in the basic writing and literacy skills required for success in college. This course emphasizes expository and analytic writing and the development of skills in summarizing and analyzing texts. English 101B provides individualized attention and tutorial assistance in a supportive environment. Successful completion of 42-ENGL-101B satisfies the English Composition I requirement and qualifies students to enroll in English Composition II (ENGL-102).
Prereq.: 42-ENGL-097 or mandatory placement based on results of the College Lang. Arts placement exam.

42-READ-081: Reading II - Introduction to Algebra II (3 ug. credits)
- A course to improve reading comprehension (literal and inferential details, paragraph organization, skimming and scanning). Vocabulary development emphasizes context clues, structural analysis of words, and dictionary skills. This course is designed to be taken in conjunction with Introduction to Algebra II (42MATH092). A reading and study skills specialist uses the content of the algebra course to assist students in the attainment of the necessary skills.

42-READ-084: Effective Reading I - Paired (3 ug. credits)
- A course to improve study skills including note taking, outlining and summarizing chapters, test taking, and time management. Vocabulary development (structural analysis and context clues) and comprehension (main idea) also stressed. This course is paired with Principles of Psychology I--Paired (32PSYC141). A reading and study specialist uses the content of the Psychology course to assist students in the attainment of the necessary skills.

42-READ-086: Math Sucess Seminar (3 ug. credits)
- A course to improve reading strategies and study skills for better comprehension of math courses. Students learn self-direction in mastering math concepts and principles of effective communication in the language of mathematics by integrating reading, writing, speaking, and listening. This course is designed to be taken in conjunction with any level of Elementary Algebra (42 MATH 091, 42 MATH 092, AND 42 MATH 101). The content of the algebra courses is used to assist students in the attainment of the necessary skills.

42-READ-095: Reading Workshop (3 ug. credits)
- A reading immersion class in which the focus is on intensive and extensive reading of a variety of narrative texts. Students write reactions to short stories, novellas, and novels that include personal responses to the texts, identification and discussion of literary elements,and strategies used to read and remember texts.

42-READ-099: Reading Academic Texts (3 ug. credits)
- A course to improve critical reading, comprehension and recall as applied to college textbooks. Reading strategies will be learned and applied to students' own textbook reading assignments from their other college courses.
Prereq.: Placement based on Reading placement score.
First Year Experience

42-INTR-101: College Success Seminar (3 ug. credits)
- This interactive course, restricted to entering freshman students in the CAT, includes an overview of UC's mission and resources and provides instruction and practice in the cognitive and affective skills students must master in order to succeed at the University and beyond. Students will be asked to employ effective communication and critical thinking skills and to explore and analyze cultural and ethical issues relevant to college success. Specific topics include the role and organization of higher education, community building, college success skills, information literacy, career planning, approaches to learning, health and wellness, and personal growth.
Prereq.: Open to CAT students only.

42-COMM-098: Communication for College and Career (3 ug. credits)
- This introductory communication course seeks to nurture and build the confidence and oral communication skills necessary for a student to perform at his/her highest level of ability. Additionally, students will learn how to apply these skills in their personal, academic and professional endeavors. Specifically, this class will focus on basic presentational skills including reading and presenting information with expression and style, conveying basic informative and persuasive information, and speaking extemporaneously. The course will also introduce and develop basic concepts of researching, supporting ideas and adapting to audiences. Individual assignments will include an oral interpretive reading, a simple debate and a speech of tribute. This course is designed to be taken concurrently with 42-ENGL-097.
