Learning Communities in the CAT …

What are they?
A Learning Community is made up of a small group of students (15 usually) enrolled in two or more courses that are linked. These students will also share a “common hour” each week facilitated by a Peer Leader – i.e. a time to get to know each other, the campus, and have some fun!

Why enroll in one?
There are many benefits to participating in a Learning Community. Here are just a few:

  • Students who participate in a Learning Community report a higher satisfaction with their UC education than do non-Learning Community students.
  • Students who participate in a Learning Community experience frequent interactions with other students and faculty. This, in turn, helps each student establish a sense of belonging to the UC community.
  • A Learning Community can provide the student with a “small campus” experience in such a large institution.
  • Research indicates that students who participate in a Learning Community are more apt to experience enhanced success – i.e. higher GPA’s and are more likely to graduate.

Ask about Learning Community enrollment when you speak with your Academic Advisor.

For the 2007-2008 school year, the CAT will offer three learning communities to students placing into ENGL 095. Details will be available at orientation.
