About us:
Who are we?
The Writing Center for the Center for Access and Transition is staffed with Professional Academic Tutors. All the tutors hold at least one College degree and have varying degrees of writing, teaching and tutoring experience. Not only do our tutors do the traditional tutoring in the Writing Center. They also work in classrooms for two hours a week facilitating the learning environment for the students and supporting them in their efforts.

What do we do?
We are here to help you with the Writing Process, anything from discussing your approach to the assignment to strategies for revision. We also conduct workshops designed to help you with your assignments.
Do I have to make an appointment?
No, we are primarily a drop-in Center. Feel free to call ahead to see how busy we are or when we have a lot of Tutors available. Some tutors will schedule a time with you once you’ve worked with them. We will eventually have a system in place to accept a few appointments but we will always be a “drop-in” lab. Please keep this in mind and when an essay is due, remember that you are not the only one with an assignment due and chances are we will be swamped and you may have to wait a long time. This doesn’t mean don’t come; this means start your assignments early and feel free to use the Writing Center, even if you haven’t written anything yet.
What is the best way to use the Writing Center?
Writing Center Tutors can be consulted at every step of the writing process. It is wise to session with them as you plan the paper, once you’ve drafted it, after you’ve revised it, and when your instructor lets you, after you revise it again once its been returned to you with their comments on it.
Things to remember:
- A tutor will not do the work for you. They will help you with strategies and ultimately teach you to get the work done efficiently.
- Working with a tutor will boost confidence in your own writing. You will become aware of what you do correctly and what you need to work on.
- Working with a tutor does not guarantee a particular grade, not even a passing grade, but consistent visits to a Writing Center reflect a commitment to excellence in your own work and a determination to succeed.
