Habitat for Humanity
International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller. Habitat
for Humanity seeks to eliminate poverty housing and to make decent shelter
a matter of conscience and action. Habitat for Humanity builds new relationships
and a sense of community while building new housing through family nurturing,
community education and construction projects.
Twelve people who were concerned about decent housing for the poor in Cincinnati
founded Cincinnati
Habitat for Humanity in 1985.Since
that time, 97 homes have been built across the city with families who are
ready for the responsibility of home ownership. Cincinnati Habitat for Humanity
is one of three Habitat affiliates in the greater Cincinnati region.
Through volunteer labor, management, expertise
and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity
builds and repairs homes. Homes are sold to qualified families by means
of a no-interest, typical 20-year mortgage. Payments received from homeowners
go directly into a local Cincinnati Habitat fund to renovate and build more
houses.
Habitat is not a handout program, but a joint venture between the homeowner
and Habitat. Each homeowner family is required to invest 500 hours of "sweat
equity" into the construction of their home. This fosters pride of
ownership among family members and lays the foundation for the development
of positive relationships with the other people who worked on the house.
To Volunteer, fill out the Volunteer Registration Forms and sign-up for a Work Day in the CCE Office, 2639 Clifton Heights, in the Stratford Heights complex.
