Cincinnatus Service Hours should now be submitted to the Admission, Scholarships and Financial Aid office on the 3rd floor of the new University Pavilion.

Cincinnatus Scholarship and Darwin T. Turner Scholarship recipients are required to complete 30 hours of community service each academic year. Students are encouraged to use our office as a resource to find meaningful service opportunities.

Cincinnatus Guidelines

Community service is defined as "Those services designed to improve the quality of life for community residents (general public), particularly low-income individuals, or solving problems related to their needs" (National and Community Service Act of 1990).
Services include areas such as health care, childcare, literacy training, education, social services, and neighborhood improvement. These diverse service opportunities provide meaningful, personally rewarding and academically relevant ways for Cincinnatus scholars to fulfill their service requirement.

Cincinnatus scholars must perform 30 hours of community service in the Academic school year from September to June.

Service performed must take place at a non-profit agency unless a request is made to the Center for Community Engagement before the service takes place.

Students are limited to 20 hours of on-campus community service.

Service hours performed on-campus for which the University would normally pay a wage will not count towards the community service requirement. Your scholarship stipend would then be subject to taxation under IRS regulations (IRS Publication 520, 1998).

To ensure that on-campus service can meet the 30-hour requirement, on-campus service must involve a program, project or service that is open to the general public. Examples of appropriate on-campus service include:

College ambassador programs serving prospective students
Honors Program activities for incoming students
The Cincinnatus Scholarship Competition event day
Bearcat Bound activities
Admissions Office tours and campus visit programs.

Students need to return the community service hours report form to the Cincinnatus/ Financial Aid office in the new University Pavilion by the end of each quarter (December 9, March 17, and June 7, 2002). A representative of the agency or organization where the service was performed must sign the hours report form as verification of service performed.

The Darwin T. Turner Scholars Program focuses on academic excellence, financial assistance, positive social interaction, cultural enrichment, and student leadership development for the University of Cincinnati's student of color population.
