Campus Opportunities

All Campus Blood Drive: April 1 - 5

Annually, Hoxworth collects over 90,000 units of blood from local donors to help save the lives of patients in our area hospitals. At least 350 volunteer blood donors and 40 volunteer platelet donors are essential each day to keep up with the demands of tri-state hospitals and their patients. Our Donors Save Lives. Who Will You Save?

Relay For Life, There's Still Time! April 5, 6

Relay For Life kicks off April 5, 6:00p at McMicken Commons. Haven't registered your team for Relay yet? There is still time! Register your team today to help create a world with more birthdays and less cancer! The next (and last!) Relay meeting is at 7:00p, April 4th in McMicken 127. Meeting topics will include all of our day-of logistics and trying to answer all of the questions that participants may have. Are You a Leader in Service? Earn a Scholarship: Deadline April 12

The Annie Fitzgerald Award for Leadership and Service is awarded students who possess a passion for community engagement. Students must be actively participating in some form of community engagement and/or service to qualify for this award. Two winners will be selected - one emerging student service or community leader entering their 2nd or 3rd year; and one student who shows commitment to leadership and service focused on a particular project, area, community partner, group or issue entering their 4th or final academic year. Each award is $2,000.

CECH PASS Center - Super Saturday: April 12, 13

This Super Saturday will be filled with fun, academic activities along with some recreational activities at the end of the day.
When: April 12, 4:00 - 5:00p (training + free pizza!) AND April 13, 8:30a - 2:30p (tutoring and activities)
Volunteer Tasks: Tutor, engage wtih and monitor 4th and 5th grade students from Mt. Washington Elementary and the Academy of World Languages.

Green-Up Day 2013: April 13

Green-Up Day is an annual service project with the Cincinnati Parks,  in which UC students insure the entire community will be able to fully enjoy and appreciate an outstanding environmental assets: Burnet Woods.
When: April 13, 8:45a - 12:00p, with lunch provided after service
Where: Trailside Nature Center, Burnet Woods
Volunteer Tasks: Prepare Burnet Woods for the its peak usage in the spring and summer by mulching, removing honeysuckle/invasive species, beautifying the grounds, and attending to any special projects.
Volunteer Perks: Walking distance from campus, when the work is done pizza will be provided for lunch.

Neighborhood Enhancement Program: April 13

Join the Center for Community Engagement, Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, the City of Cincinnati, and the Mt. Airy community for the Neighborhood Enhancement Program (NEP) kick-off! The NEP is a 90-day collaborative effort between City departments, neighborhood residents and community organizations.
When: April 13, 8:30a - 3:00p
Where: Meet at McMicken Circle (near University Pavilion) and travel together to Mt. Airy.
Volunteer Tasks: Volunteers will work in teams to address projects identified by the community for the NEP. Projects may include: painting, vacant/blighted property mitigation, mulching, clearing brush, litter control, graffiti abatement, and other tasks designed to jump-start the Mt. Airy community's NEP.

Community Opportunities

Seven Hills Neighborhood Houses - Findlay Street After School Program: Flexible, After School

Findlay Street Neighborhood House has historically served as a Safe Haven in the West End where youth can engage in positive activities. Computer Training, Teen Center and the Gym are open daily giving youth opportunities to engage in activities with the support of caring adults.
When: Days and times can be flexible within the after school hours.
Where: 901 Findlay St., 45214
Volunteer Tasks: Interacting with children, tutoring/homework help and help with any other activities. The after school program has 40 youth ages of 6 to 16 who could benefit from homework help and tutoring. Youth also receive lessons in health and nutrition, have use of our computer lab to develop their computer skills and to complete homework assignments. A snack and dinner are served each day throughout the school year.

Freestore Foodbank: April 6

When people come to the Freestore Foodbank for food, they help them find the other things they may need — a safe place to live, benefits they need, access to affordable health care, clothing or job skills and placement.  For the Freestore, food is not the end product. Rather, food is the vehicle for a larger conversation that leads to self-reliance.

Giving Fields
Located in Melbourne, Kentucky, just 10 miles southeast of downtown. In the first two seasons, over 230,000 pounds of fresh produce was grown and harvested for immediate distribution to our Northern Kentucky neighbors in need.

Mayerson Distribution Center
Student Nights at the Mayerson Distribution Center! Students will help assemble Power Packs or sort canned goods in a fun and friendly environment.

Cincinnati Parks and OTR: April 6

Cincinnati Parks needs 10 volunteers to help with spring clean-up and weeding in the neighborhood garden in Over-The-Rhine.
When: April 6, 9:00a - 12:00p
Where: Liberty Gardens, located on Liberty Ave.
Volunteer Tasks: Work with experienced neighborhood gardeners who have been maintaining this area for many years. There are many unique species in this garden. A great way to learn about plants and help create a beautiful space!

Bluegrass for Babies Healthy Kids Outreach Labs: April 6

Bluegrass for Babies benefits Cincinnati Children's Hospital and works to improve the health of children in the Cincinnati Area by providing young families education and tools to help kids stay healthy. The Healthy Kids Outreach Labs engage young children with fun activities centered around organic foods, composting at home, and making your own household cleaners!
When: April 6, 10:00a - 1:30p (1.5 hours shifts if necessary)
Where: Cincinnati Children's Museum, 1301 Western Ave., 45203
Volunteer Tasks: Help children learn about waste reduction through a sorting game, dig for worms in a compost bin, and complete a composting craft. Volunteers should be comfortable speaking to preschool aged children and young parents. Set up and break down included.

Keep Cincinnati Beautiful: April 6, 13

State Roadway Clean-Up: April 6
Help kick off the 2013 Great American Cleanup season by rolling up your sleeves and hittin’ the streets! Well, the highways, to be exact. Our partner, the Ohio Department of Transportation, will have your back, so join us as we pick up litter and clean up the landscaping along some of the city’s dirtiest highway ramps.
When: April 6, registration begins at 10:30a, cleanup ends at 2:00p
Where: 1400 Seymour Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45237.
Volunteer Tasks: Groups of 10-15 volunteers will work alongside an ODOT crew member to pick up litter and clean greenspace. Volunteers will receive safety vests and supplies on site.

Art Installation: April 13
Help Keep Cincinnati Beautiful finish an art installation at the site of the new dunnhumby building downtown. Weave colorful vinyl along the fence around the construction site. Prior experience is not necessary!
When: 10:00a - 1:00p and/or 1:00 - 4:00p. You are welcome to volunteer for the entire day as well (lunch will not be provided).

Granny's Garden School: April 6, 7, 13, 14

Granny's Garden School runs a plant-based, environmental education program at the Loveland Primary and Elementary Schools and assists other schools with developing school garden programs in the Greater Cincinnati Area.

Canine Camp Series: April 6, 13, 20 and 27

Assist Cincinnati Park staff at each of the Explore Nature Canine Camps. Have fun as a hike leader or help lead games with participating dogs and their owners.

Girl Scouts: April 8 - May

Work directly with girls alongside Girl Scout staff to facilitate easy to follow curricula. Three different days and locations to choose from and you can choose the time slot during the day. Supplies, curriculum, training provided, must complete on-line application.
When: 3 dates to choose from, Tuesdays (7:30a - 2:00p), Wednesdays (9:30a - 3:00p) or Fridays (8:30a - 3:30p).
Where: 3 Elementary locations to choose from, Midway, Roll Hill, or Cheviot (each ~15 minutes from UC).
Volunteer Tasks: Facilitate Girl Scout curriculum alongside Girl Scout staff with a group of 15 - 25 girls.

Reality City at Aiken High School: April 11

Reality City is a unique event designed to give middle and high school students a better perspective on the lifestyle their desired career might provide them. Career planning and financial literacy concepts are the main focus of this program. Students choose a career they envision having in the future and visit a series of stations where they will have to pay for expenses associated with different life experiences, such as rent/mortgage, car loans, student loans, utilities, etc.

Amazing Arts Race: April 13

This event allows participants to discover all the amazing art that Cincinnati has to offer through an ArtsWave Young Professionals event inspired by the hit reality series The Amazing Race. Teams race to complete a series of arts challenges in Downtown Cincinnati including finding works of art and architecture, answering arts trivia, and making art themselves. Su Casa ESL, and GED Classes: Starting April 13

Su Casa was founded in 1997 as a response to the sudden increase in the numbers of immigrants arriving to Cincinnati from Mexico and the rest of Latin America. Su Casa was the first organization in the Cincinnati region to focus on the Latino Community and the influx of immigrants to the area.

Santa Maria Wellness/Bienestar Health Fair: April 14

Santa Maria Community Services provides Greater Price Hill with educational tools and resources to build strong families, promote healthy residents and foster neighborhood revitalization. At the Fair 10+ screenings offered to English and Spanish speaking residents; 20+ exhibit talbes of health related literature; a healthy snack and music are provided.

Wild Ones at Sooty Acres: April 14, May 12, June 9

A day of work day at Hauck Botanic Gardens (Sooty Acres) and home of the Civic Garden Center of Cincinnati, very close to main campus. The Civic Garden Center is a non-profit horticultural resource that enriches lives through education, community beautification and environmental stewardship. The local chapter of "Wild Ones: Native Plants, Natural Landscapes" group is working to restore the garden of the original owner of a property that is now a Cincinnati Park. It is a huge task and much help is needed.

Volunteer Tasks: Include general weeding and removal of non-native invasive plants, edging, and in the coming weeks, mulching of the beds. Wear sturdy clothing and shoes and dress for the weather. Tools and gloves provided.

Finneytown AfterProm: April 19, 20, 21

After-Prom provides a safe environment for high school students to enjoy after the night of prom

Volunteer Tasks: Set up involves removing school furniture, putting up plastic walls and decorating--need to be able to lift 35 lb. or so. Working the event involves being paired with another UC student, working in one of the activity rooms alongside the Finneytown adults--those working the event have a mandatory meeting prior to the event--date and time TBD. Tear down means moving the furniture back and packing up decorations--need to be able to life 35 lb or so.
Volunteer Perks: Pizza for those working set up and tear down, food all night long for those working the event.

American Heart Association - Newport HeartChase: April 20

The mission of the American Heart Association is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The American Heart Association's HeartChase™ is an innovative community event that provides a fun, new way to promote healthy living and support a great cause. Think of the around-town excitement from shows like The Amazing Race meets wacky team-based games like Minute-to-Win-It. And when you combine awesome games, friendly competition, and a very important mission, you've got great fun with a purpose.

Cincinnati Works

Cincinnati Works offers a holistic approach to eliminating poverty in the Tri-State area by providing job skill training and ongoing employment counseling. Cincinnati Works helps people in poverty reach economic self-sufficiency through finding employment, retaining employment, and advancing over time to higher paying jobs.
When: Monthly (or more often if desired); Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, 9:00a - 3:00p any 2-hour shift.

Volunteer Tasks: Job Search Assistant, work with clients in the job search lab to help with online applications, basic computer skills, resume/cover letter preparation, and other computer-based tasks.

Deupree House Meals on Wheels

The mission and cause of Meals on Wheels is to provide home cooked meals and warm visits to the elderly and shut-ins of Cincinnati. Deupree Meals on Wheels is in need of drivers to deliver meals to elderly shut-ins in the Eastern part of Cincinnati. Our program is volunteered based, and only exists because of dedicated volunteers!
When: Tuesday through Friday 10:30a - 12:00p (choose one or more days).

St. Margaret Hall: Any Day

St. Margaret Hall, a Catholic nursing and residential care facility for the elderly, is always looking for volunteers to help provide activities to enhance quality of life through recreation for residents. There are many opportunities at St. Margaret Hall to make a difference in someone’s life; from reading to people to assisting residents on the computer/nook, and even bringing your pet to visit or just spending one on one time with people.
Where: 1960 Madison Rd., 45206, close to campus.
Volunteer Tasks: Coffee Hour- volunteers can do a coffee hour with residents on our assisted living unit. Times can be flexible, but one hour a week during the afternoon would be preferred. Elevator - run the elevator during resident meal times (11:15a - 1:00p and/or 5:15 - 7:00p every day).

Summer Youth Ministry Intern: June - August

Shiloh United Methodist Church in Cincinnati is looking for someone called into youth ministry who has at least one year of college completed. This 10 week internship is an intensive, full-time, fully immersive internship that spans the summer months (June – August). The Covington Mentoring Program

Bulldog Connection is the middle and high school program in Covington. You must be 21 years of age, have a clean background check, and the desire to change someone’s life. Committing to at least one year with the student, you will meet with them a total of 4 hours a month, split up however works best for both of your schedules. The Lunch Buddy program involves an adult 18 or older, and an elementary school student. You will meet with them during their lunch period, either in the lunch room or the Family Resource Center at the school. After-School Buddy follows the same criteria as the Lunch Buddies, but meets primarily after school.

We are currently looking for responsible volunteers to assist in transporting residents from their rooms to the activity room for church programs and to spend one on one time with some folks doing such things as reading, playing cards/games, painting nails, etc. Musicians and Singers are welcome as well for strolling entertainment and/or groups functions.
Where: 6940 Stiegler Lane (off of Camargo Rd. in Madeira, Ohio)
When: Sundays from 1pm-4pm. Other days and times are available as well.

Help Homeless Children with Schoolwork @ The Interfaith Hospitality Network of Greater Cincinnati

When: 3:00p – 5:00p Mondays through Thursdays

Volunteer Tasks: assist children with homework at the Homework Help Program. As part of the volunteer application process references will be requested and a background check will be required

Mentor @ Big Brothers Big Sister, Near Campus

We are seeking mentors for our site-based programs near the UC campus. 
Be a Lunch Buddy: 45 minutes a week at Roll Hill Academy or Newport Schools. Have lunch, play games, and share life stories with your mentee. 
Mentor at the Boys and Girls Club: Over-the-Rhine (Thursdays 5:30 - 6:30p), or Avondale (Wednesdays 5:30 - 6:30p). Play sports, help with homework, talk, and encourage. You can earn ~35 hours of service time with lunch buddies and 40-50 hours with the boys and girls club program.
