General Information

The CCM Computer Technology Department maintains and troubleshoots more than 400 computers, installs UC supported software, updates UC supported software, and installs new computer equipment. A coordinator runs the department and works 40 hours a week. There are usually three students who work an average of 20 hours per week.

The Coordinator is Mr. Jorin Edgerly (ccmtech@uc.edu), who is located in MEH 3115. Rarely will you find the computer technicians in their office, as they are out in the "field" taking care of problems and installing new equipment.

UC Telephones

The procedure for getting phone services can be found on the UCit website Telephone FAQ. In addition to general phone service, this site also addresses questions related to long distance and voice mail.

The manual for your phone and for UC's voice mail system can be found on the Directory Services website. (See the Telephone User Guide for your model.)

Computer Problems

Most of the common problems, (such as computer freezing and not being able to get into your email) can be fixed by "re-booting"-turning off your computer and restarting it. Basic computer "well-being" depends on computer users' awareness of simple maintenance techniques, such as "rebuilding the desktop" and "zapping the PRAM". The UCit Helpdesk (556-HELP) can familiarize you with these processes.

The UCit Helpdesk is required to help you with computers or software provided by the university. For many problems, the Helpdesk may be able to guide you through a fix of your problem over the phone.

Should you encounter a problem with a CCM computer that the Helpdesk is unable to resolve by phone, ask the Helpdesk representative to issue a trouble ticket to the CCM computer technology department. This puts you in a queue that the technicians check on a regular basis. Do not allow the Helpdesk to outsource any problems you have with your computer or printer. Have them contact the CCM Computer Department. Similarly, if the Helpdesk tells you that they do not know about Macs and asks you to "wait until our Mac guy comes in", you should then ask the Helpdesk technicianm to issue a ticket for the CCM technicians.

Important: In order to receive help from the CCM Computer Technology Department, you need to be placed on their queue list of calls. Fairness in response to trouble tickets is a top priority. Do not call or email the CCM computer technicians directly.

If the CCM Tech Department has already been to your office regarding the same problem, you may then email ccmtech@uc.edu and a CCM Technician will revisit you.

Printer Problems

While some problems with printers may have to be outsourced, you should first call the UCit Helpdesk (6-3785 or 556-HELP) to put in a ticket to the CCM Technology Department. They will investigate your specific situation. Do not let the Helpdesk outsource your problem. Instead, ask them to issue a ticket to the CCM Technology Department.

Laptop Borrowing

Currently, CCM Technicians have 5 PC and 4 MAC laptops available to be checked out for faculty university use. The time limit is 2 months per check out. In order to borrow a laptop, contact the CCM Tech Department by email (ccmtech@uc.edu) at least 24 hours before you need the equipment. Be sure to specificy what your need is (i.e. you will be hooking it up to a projector). Please include a time that you can pick up the equipment at the CCM Technology Office (MEH 3115) or a time that they can deliver the laptop to your faculty office.

CCM Computer Laboratory (3207 Mary Emery Hall)

The CCM Computer Laboratory (MEH 3207) is supported with ITIE funds, and therefore its resources are only available to students. Printers are for the students only and work on a pay-to-print policy posted in the lab.

Faculty members are permitted to reserve the laboratory for teaching technology related to classes and for technology related workshops. Contact Trina Williams at 556-9475 to reserve the lab.

If technical problems occur in the lab, contact the lab's supervising GA. If he/she is not available, contact Tondra Holt (556-9470) in the college office. If she is unavailable, contact the UCit Helpdesk (6-3785) and get a trouble ticket. If the lab needs cleaning, notify John McDonagh, Director of Facilities by e-mail at (a href="mailto:john.mcdonagh@uc.edu">ohn.mcdonagh@uc.edu.

Computer/Software Training

One resource for students to investigate is the Student Technology Resources Center (STRC), part of Multimedia Services at the University Libraries. The STRC is a student-centered service area dedicated to helping users with their instructional technology needs.

Another great resource, which is generally free of charge and offered at flexible times and locations, is the Academic Information Technology and Libraries program. AIT&L and University Libraries offer workshops for students to promote the effective use of library resources and new technologies that support research, teaching, and presentation.

Yet a third source for software training of commonly used operating systems and software (such as Office) is the CustomGuide Computer Software Reference provided by UC Human Resources for use at the University only, by faculty, staff, and students.

Training for CCM supported software (such as Finale, MS Office, and Apple Works) is not taught by the CCM computer technicians. Training and education for many of those applications can be found at the resources and links above.

The CCM Technology Committee is putting together a list of faculty/staff who are "experts" at different software, and who are generously willing to help you learn the programs. A partial list of such experts includes:

CCM Smart Classrooms

Smart Classrooms can be checked out for recurring class use through Trina Williams at 556-9475. Because of the demand for these rooms, please let her know promptly so that an appropraitee room can be reserved for you. For one-time or limited use, Smart Classrooms are reserved through Brian Anderson in the Scheduling Office at 556-9430.

A detailed list of smart classroom equipment is forthcoming.

Problems with Smart Classrooms

If you experience a problem with Smart Classroom equipment, first look for the equipment documentation in the Smart desk.

If that doesn't help you to fix your problem, contact Dave Colussi, Broadcast Engineer, 556-9495 or email him at David.Colussi@uc.edu.

Wireless Networks at CCM

While there are not yet any formal wireless access points at CCM, they are in the planning stages. Some residual hot spots can be found in and around CCM. The strongest signal is from the UC SSID "NoWireUC" which may be detected near the Faculty Lounge hallway located around the corner from classroom 3225. A recent coverage survey also indicated residual hot spots as detailed in the list below. Your results may vary. Your compatible wireless card must first be registered with UCIT. For more information on wireless networking at UC, including other wireless locations, visit UCIT's Wireless Data Communications web page.

Theft and Vandalism

University-owned Equipment

Call UC Public Saftey immediately, 6-1111, and report the theft or vandalism with as much detail as you can provide.

Notify the Performance Management Office (6-9460) of the theft or vandalism and of the status of the incident report. A copy of the report will be sent to this office and will then be forwarded to either the divisional office or the CCM Business Office. The Performance Management office will also take care of arranging for any necessary repairs to the physical plant if damage was sustained.

Notify your divisional office of the theft. If an insurance claim will be made, work with the divisional secretary to determine UC ID number, model number, serial number, and value of the stolen item(s).

For Divisional Secretaries:
Prepare a CUFS worksheet (RX) for ordering the replacement item with an account number to cover the $220, $350, or $500 deductible whichever is applicable.

Forward the CUFS worksheet, a copy of the police report, and a copy of the original purchase order to Asst. Dean Katherine Mohylsky (3820 CCPA).

Do an on-line adjustment to inventory records to show that the item was disposed of due to vandalism and/or theft.

Personally-owned Property

Call UC Security to report a theft of personally owned property as you would for UC-owned property. However, University insurance does not cover theft or damage to personal property (see exception below). You should check to see if your own homeowners or other insurance covers your property while on UC premises.

Exception: Items will be covered by UC Insurance if they meet the following 3 conditions:

  1. they are under the care, custody, and control of your department
  2. they are items you need to do your UC work
  3. they have been properly registered by you with the Risk Management and Insurance Office on an annual basis
You must provide a list of these items every year to the Risk Management Office, M.L. 0785, with copies sent to Asst. Dean Katherine Mohylsky and your Division Office. Please be sure your list includes detail, i.e., serial and model number, plus a copy of the purchase receipt.

PLEASE SUBMIT THE LIST EACH YEAR EVEN IF THE ITEMS HAVE NOT CHANGED.

Stolen/Lost Keys

If your UC/CCM keys are stolen or presumed lost, notify Yvonne Becknell ASAP (556-9460).
