General Information

The CCM Computer Technology Department maintains and troubleshoots more than 400 computers, installs UC supported software, updates UC supported software, and installs new computer equipment. A coordinator runs the department and works 40 hours a week. There are usually three students who work an average of 20 hours per week.

The Coordinator is Mr. Jorin Edgerly (ccmtech@uc.edu), who is located in MEH 3115. Rarely will you find the computer technicians in their office, as they are out in the "field" taking care of problems and installing new equipment.

Computer Problems

Most of the common problems, (such as computer freezing and not being able to get into your email) can be fixed by "re-booting"-turning off your computer and restarting it. Basic computer "well-being" depends on computer users' awareness of simple maintenance techniques, such as "rebuilding the desktop" and "zapping the PRAM". The UCit Helpdesk (556-HELP) can familiarize you with these processes.

The UCit Helpdesk is required to help you with computers or software provided by the university. In case you encounter a problem the Helpdesk is unable to solve, and it is a CCM issue, request a trouble ticket sent to CCM computer technology department. This puts you in a queue that the technicians check on a regular basis.

Important: In order to receive help from the CCM Computer Technology Department, you need to be placed on their list of calls. Do not call or email the CCM computer technicians directly.

Laptop Borrowing

Students can borrow laptops, projectors, video cameras, and other equipment from the UC Library System. For more information, go to www.libraries.uc.edu/services/strc/.

CCM Computer Laboratory (3207 Mary Emery Hall)

The CCM Laboratory contains both PC's and Macintosh computers. It is set up as a classroom, as CCM faculty occasionally use the laboratory to give computer-based instruction. Open hours are posted outside the door. You will need a current university ID to enter. You must be a current CCM student to gain access to this laboratory.

The CCM Computer Laboratory (MEH 3207) is supported with ITIE funds. Printing functions are for students only and work on a pay-to-print policy posted in the lab. You will need to use your BearCat card to activate the pay-to-print feature. You can get money put on your card at the UC Bookstore or Langsam Library.

Each computer station is furnished with a MIDI keyboard. A password is needed to make the MIDI keyboards accept input. Students may obtain the password from the supervising GA.

If you have any trouble with the hardware, software, or the condition of the laboratory, please report it to the laboratory assistant working in the lab. The assistant should be able to help you--if not, make sure to ask that the problem be reported to the assistant's supervisor.

Additional Computer Lab Information

Computer/Software Training

One resource for students to investigate is the Student Technology Resources Center (STRC), part of Multimedia Services at the University Libraries. The STRC is a student-centered service area dedicated to helping users with their instructional technology needs.

Another great resource, which is generally free of charge and offered at flexible times and locations, is the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library program. Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library and University of Cincinnati Libraries offer workshops for students to promote the effective use of library resources and new technologies that support research, teaching, and presentation.

Yet a third source for software training of commonly used operating systems and software (such as Office) is the CustomGuide Computer Software Reference provided by UC Human Resources for use at the University only, by faculty, staff, and students.

Training for CCM supported software (such as Finale, MS Office, and Apple Works) is not taught by the CCM computer technicians. Training and education for many of those applications can be found in the resources and links above.

Software/Hardware Requests and Upgrading

To upgrade the equipment/software in the lab, a student should first contact his/her faculty advisor. The request will be given to appropriate administrative and IT staff who will determine whether the upgrade/new equipment is needed and/or affordable. The same procedure is used to suggest new software for use at CCM.

Important: No unauthorized person is permitted to install software on any university computer. CCM's Technology Department installs all software.

CCM Smart Classrooms

CCM has installed "Smart Classroom" features in many of its classrooms. These include: turntables, VCR's, DVD's, computers, laptop hookups, CD players, etc. All can be viewed by the class via projector.

CCM is constantly trying to keep the equipment upgraded as well as secure. Students who discover a theft or vandalism should immediately attempt to report it to a faculty member. If no faculty member is immediately available, the student should call UC Security directly at 556-1111. Report the theft or vandalism with as much detail as you can provide. Thank you for doing your part in keeping CCM a beautiful and well-equipped facility!

Wireless Networks at CCM

Some residual hot spots can be found in and around CCM. The strongest signal is from the UC SSID "NoWireUC" which may be detected near the Faculty Lounge hallway located around the corner from classroom 3225. A recent coverage survey also indicated residual hot spots as detailed in the list below. Your results may vary. Your compatible wireless card must first be registered with UCIT. For more information on wireless networking at UC, including other wireless locations, visit UCIT's Wireless Data Communications web page.
