Graduate Assistants

Jared Chase

            Jared Chase is a first year candidate for the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A Colorado native, Jared studied music education and trumpet performance at the University of Colorado, Boulder. At home in both jazz and classical idioms Jared performed for the Boulder Broadway Company, Colorado Light Opera, and the Boulder Dinner Theatre before coming to Cincinnati in 2003 to pursue a Master of Music degree from the College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in trumpet performance. Jared has studied trumpet with Phil Collins (former Principal Trumpet, Cincinnati Symphony), Alan Siebert and Terry Sawchuck. His conducting teachers have included Allan McMurray, Rob Carnahan, Terence Milligan, Steven Coker and Rodney Winther. He has guest conducted on many recitals and concerts including conducting performances with the CCM Symphony Band, CCM Brass Choir, and the CCM Prep Department Brass Choir. He founded the Seven Hills Brass, a large professional brass ensemble which performs the best literature for brass choir.

            Jared is a freelance performer in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas and actively performs with the Dayton Philharmonic, Dayton Philharmonic Concert Band, Springfield Symphony, Blue Ash Symphony, Kentucky Symphony, Lima Symphony Orchestra and as a member of the Cincinnati Brass Quintet (www.cincinnatibrass.com). He has also taught band for Central State University, Greeneview Local School District, and Jefferson County Public Schools. He is currently the Adjunct Professor of Trumpet for Sinclair Community College in Dayton, and the Music Director of First Presbyterian Church of Ft. Thomas, Kentucky. His professional affiliations include: the College Band Directors National Association, MENC: The National Association for Music Education, the Ohio Music Educators Association, and the International Trumpet Guild.

Angela Holt

            Angela Holt is a candidate for the Master of Music degree in wind conducting at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.  She is currently the conductor of the University of Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.  In addition to this and her wind conducting duties, she also teaches the Introduction to Conducting class for undergraduate students at the conservatory.  Prior to her CCM studies, she was the associate director of bands at Pine Tree High School in Longview, TX from 2001-06, where her teaching responsibilities ranged from 6th -12th grade.  The primary focus of her position was “The Pride” Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and “The Dissonance” jazz band.  She also played with the East Texas Symphonic Band under the direction of Dr. James Snowden, as a euphonium player for six years. She also maintained a private piano studio, was a trumpet member of the Oakland Heights Baptist Church orchestra and handbell choir, and performed in a number of community events including pit orchestra in the musical, “The Scarlet Pimpernel.” Miss Holt has been involved in adjudicating contests and serving as a guest clinician for bands. Miss Holt has had the opportunity to sing in the choirs of world-reknown conductor John Nelson, Wheaton College conductor Dr. Mary Hopper, Christian artist Michael Card, and arranger Mark Hayes.  She received her Bachelor’s in Music Education from Wheaton College Conservatory of Music.  Her teachers have included Judy Owens, Dr. James Snowden, Dr. Paul Wiens, Dr. Daniel Paul Horn, and Dr. Daniel Sommerville.  Miss Holt’s professional affiliations have included the Conductor’s Guild, Longview Piano Teacher’s Association, Texas Music Teachers’ Association, Texas Bandmasters’ Assoication, Illinois Music Teachers’ Association, College Band Directors National Association, and World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles.

Keith Phillips

            Originally from Mobile, Alabama, Keith Phillips is currently pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in wind conducting from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). As a doctoral conducting associate at CCM, Phillips teaches undergraduate conducting and serves as assistant conductor to the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble.

            Prior to his appointment at CCM, Phillips received a Bachelor of Instrumental Music Education degree, summa cum laude with special honors in music, from Jacksonville State University. He recently earned the Master of Music Performance degree in instrumental conducting from East Carolina University where he conducted the ECU Concert Band and served as Director of the ECU ‘Sixth Man’ Basketball Pep Bands. Additionally, Phillips served as a graduate conducting associate to the ECU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, and Marching Pirates, and was a teaching assistant in undergraduate conducting and applied trumpet. While a graduate student at ECU, he regularly performed with the ECU Wind Ensemble and Symphony Orchestra, and was a member of the ECU Chamber Singers, performing with the group on the compact disc recording, Greater Love (Gothic Records), as well as at the national convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Miami, FL. Furthermore, he served as conductor of the Tar River Community Band for two seasons and is a former Instructor of Music at Craven Community College in New Bern, NC. His professional affiliations include the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, College Band Directors National Association, Conductor’s Guild, Ohio Music Educators Association, MENC: The National Association for Music Education, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Kappa Delta Pi. Of late, he was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society and was awarded honorary membership into the Kappa Sigma chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity.

            Additionally, Phillips was awarded the Master of Divinity with specialization in Worship Leadership and a concentration in music from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in May of 2004. Subsequently, he has served as associate pastor of music in various local churches throughout Alabama, Mississippi and Ohio. He and his wife, Stephanie, reside in Mason, Ohio.

Matthew Westgate     

           Matthew J. Westgate, conductor of the Cincinnati Youth Wind Ensemble, is a doctoral associate in wind conducting at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.  In addition to his conducting duties at CCM, Matthew is also an adjunct faculty member at Xavier University where he teaches instrumental methods to graduate and undergraduate music education students.  In October of 2007, he was honored with an invitation to conduct the Eastman Wind Ensemble at the First Annual Frederick Fennell Conducting Masterclass at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY.

            Prior to his appointment at CCM, Matthew served as a graduate conducting assistant at Western Michigan University while completing his Master’s Degree (MM) in wind conducting with Dr. Robert Spradling. During his tenure at WMU, he served as assistant conductor with the University Symphonic and Concert bands, graduate and undergraduate chamber ensembles, athletic bands, and the WMU Bronco Marching Band.  In the spring of 2006 he received the School of Music “Teaching Effectiveness Award,” and won the WMU “All-University Graduate Teacher Award” in recognition of his work with undergraduate conducting courses. From 2000-2004, Mr. Westgate worked in the Bangor and South Haven (Michigan) public school systems where his ensembles consistently received superior ratings at concert, jazz, and marching festivals.

            Matthew is a regular summer faculty member in both the concert and jazz areas at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, MI, and was the arranger and instrumental musical director in 2003-2004 for the “Schussycats”, a summer musical revue at Schuss Mountain at the Shanty Creek Resort.  He is an active clinician, arranger, and adjudicator, and performs regularly as a classical and jazz trombonist.   His professional affiliations include:  the College Band Directors National Association, Conductor’s Guild, World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Ohio Music Educators Association, and MENC: The National Association for Music Education.
