CURRENT PROGRAMS

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program (GEARUP) works with students, parents and teachers to help them gain access to higher education through academic support, information, and enrichment programs. As early as the sixth grade, students and their families can prepare for their college education by actively learning about educational resources.
GEAR UP is designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. Grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school.

The Supplemental Education Services program strengthens academic achievement and provides enrichment for eligible Cincinnati Public school students through individualized targeted academic interventions. UC SES provision of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) enables low-income parents to seek out free tutoring services for their children who are struggling in school. These services provide students with extra help in the academic subjects of reading, language arts, and mathematics. The tutoring services are to be delivered outside the regular school day, before or after school, and/or on weekends.
UC SES is a state-approved provider. The University of Cincinnati has the capacity and resources to deliver a high-quality, research-based tutoring program that is aligned with state standards.

The 2008 Summer Career Exploration Camp (SCEC), funded by a grant from Hamilton County Job & Family Services, provides 150 GEARUP students with the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers and to develop an Individual Career Plan. The Career Exploration Camp is designed to provide current high school students with the opportunity to explore career fields that are considered high-demand, well-paid, and accessible with two years or less of post-secondary education /training. Career exploration and exposure opportunities will be provided through direct classroom instruction, research, classroom presentations by employers/ employees/ educators, and job shadowing experiences.
