Welcome! This site provides you with much of the important general information you need as an adjunct. Your individual departments will also have specific information and processes necessary to your work. Contact your Chair or adjunct coordinator to learn other essentials as soon as possible.

Hiring Process (www.uc.edu/hr)

Adjuncts at UC are hired by individual departments. As with all hiring processes, the Adjunct hiring process requires that several forms be completed and advanced through a system that includes your home department and the Human Resources Department. Your driver's license and Social Security card will be photocopied at your department.

Things to do prior to your first day of employment:

  • Sign and return a copy of your Offer Letter indicating your acceptance of the position you have been offered.
  • Download, print and complete required employment forms (DMA and Form I‐9) – available at http://www.uc.edu/hr/toolkits/new_hire.html.
  • Gather acceptable forms of identification. You will find a list of acceptable forms of identification on page 5 of Form 1‐9 (located at http://www.uc.edu/hr/toolkits/new_hire.html).
  • Review the benefit plan options that are available to you. Review any benefit coverage (cost/benefit level, etc.) available through your spouse/domestic partner in order to choose the coverages that best meet your needs. Information about your benefit plan options is available at http://www.uc.edu/hr/benefits.html.
  • You will complete your federal and state tax withholding elections online via Employee Self Service (ESS). You can review the federal and state tax forms online at http://www.uc.edu/hr/toolkits/new_hire.html.
  • You will complete the payroll direct deposit process online via Employee Self Service (ESS). You will need your checking or savings banking information (routing/transit number and account number) in order to complete your entry. ESS is available to you on or after your first day of employment. Access instructions can be found at https://www.ucflex.uc.edu/irj/portal. department might require other documents such as a curriculum vitae and written letters of recommendation.
  • Background Checks: A national criminal background check is required for all faculty new hires for all regular line and adjunct (OPS) faculty positions. A background check is required for returning adjunct faculty members who have been off the UCF payroll for more than one year.

When a new university employee's information enters the HR system, the university's Identity Management System generates a user ID, and the Exchange e-mail system automatically creates an account. Typically, the 6+2 user ID is the first six characters of a user’s last name the user's first and middle initials. However, this is not e-mail policy, and you cannot assume it will always hold true.

Employee Numbers: M#
As part of your hiring process, you will be assigned an identification number. Please keep this number handy, as it is often used as reference in UC's many systems (HR, Purchasing, etc.).

Grading and Grade Submission
Grades may be sumbitted via the UC registrar. For more information on submitting term grades please visit: http://www.uc.edu/registrar.html

Office Hours
The University does not have a set policy for minimum number of office hours to hold, though instructors are required to post their office hours. Some colleges and departments do have individual requirements; check with your department chair for guidance.

Parking
Parking permits can be purchased through the UC Parking Services website: http://www.uc.edu/parking.html, or purchased at the Edwards Center.

Parking services is opened Monday-Friday, 7am-5pm.

Professional Development: Faculty Center Consultations
The Center For the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning’s (CET&L) primary mission is to support and promote faculty in their roles as teachers, researchers, scholars, and as members of UC and the Greater Cincinnati community. Essential to such support is the enhancement of faculty success at any career stage and the promotion of collegiality. Syllabus Information
Your course is part of a program of courses and its content includes program student learning objectives . If you "inherit" a syllabus from a previous instructor, it is doubly important that you understand the course objectives and student learning outcomes, and how all the pieces of the course (readings, activities, assignments, assessments) fit together toward the course objectives. Be sure you discuss these and other course requirements determined by the program faculty with your Chair or adjunct coordinator before developing your syllabus.

Textbooks and Desk Copies
In many departments, a central coordinator orders all the textbooks for everyone; inquire whether this is true in your department. If you are joining UC with little time before the start of the semester, you will want to check first that the books have been ordered, and physically check that they are available for students for purchase in the bookstore.

If your department requests that you order books yourself, do so online.

Desk copies are typically arranged through a campus representative from the book publisher. One common method to be put in touch with this person is to ask a colleague or your department chair to email that representative with your name and contact information. Your department chair or department administrative assistant can give you a letter that will enable you to pick up a copy of the text at the bookstore.
